health-related fitness
A physical state encompassing cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, muscular flexibility, and body composition.
exercise
A type of physical activity that requires planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness.
moderate physical activity
Activity that uses 150 calories of energy per day, or 1,000 calories per week.
vigorous physical activity
An activity similar to jogging that causes rapid breathing and a substantial increase in heart rate.
light physical activity
Any activity that uses less than 150 calories of energy per day, such as casual walking and light household chores.
physical activity
Bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure and produces progressive health benefits.
risk factors
Characteristics that predict the chances for developing a certain disease.
performance-related fitness
Components of fitness important for successful motor performance in athletic events and in lifetime sports and activities.
sedentary death syndrome (SeDS)
Deaths that are attributed to a lack of regular physical activity.
hypokinetic diseases
Diseases related to a lack of physical activity.
nonexercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)
Energy expended doing everyday activities not related to exercise.
chronic diseases
Illnesses that develop and last over a long time period.
epidemiological
Of the study of epidemic diseases.
wellness
The constant and deliberate effort to stay healthy and achieve the highest potential for well-being.
physical fitness
The general capacity to adapt and respond favorably to physical effort.
