Particles

Atoms, ions, and molecules, moving in different ways make up all matter.

Two main factors that determine the state of matter

Particle motion and particle forces.

There is a fourth state of matter

Plasma; is a high-energy matter consisting of positively charged and negatively charged particles.

The three most common forms or state of matter

Solid, liquids, and gases

Density

The mass per unit volume of a substance. units are usually g/cm^3 or g/mL.

Liquid Volume

Units are usually liter (L) or milliliters (mL).

Solid Volume

Units for solid volume are usually cubic centimeters (cm^3) or cubic meters (m^3).

You can describe matter in many ways

Using measurements like mass, volume, and density.

Density of a given substance

remains constant regardless of size of the sample.

Mass

the amount of matter in an object. The units are often grams (g) or kilograms (kg).

Volume

the amount of space that a sample of matter occupies.
