What is the main conflict of The Catcher in the Rye (not Holden getting kicked out of school and how to explain to his parents - complication)? Explain why.

- holden constantly rejects the adult world and growing up - calls adults phony, hates many adult elements, idolizes childhood - leads him to flunk out of school, become depressed, lose friends - was very damaging to him - realized that everyone grows up and he has to - became happier, liked people, is restarting school, things are becomign better for him "When I was all set to go, when I had my bags and all, I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor. I was sort of crying. I don't know why. I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it," (68). This excerpt encapsulates Holden's attempts to shield himself from the adult, or in his perspective, the 'phony' world. This shielding is portrayed by Holden's purposeful action of putting his red hunting hat on. The hat itself, if very different from the others alluding to Holden's uniqueness and individuality, a value that he does not want to lose to growing up. This act of shield also illustrates Holden's inability of recognizing his emotional issues. This is seen through the heavy baggage Holden constantly carries around in his suitcases, especially when he chooses to go into isolation. Holden's choice to wear the hat in an odd way also shows his childlike behaviors in the present moment, implying that they are not going to change as long as he continues wearing his hat and not confronting his issues.

- paradox showing stark differences between 2 indiviauls - immature man wants fame w/o work, would end life to attain it - flawed way of thinking, he wouldn't experience benefits of being hero, it would only be in his legacy -mature man wants to make an impact and be unrecgonzied for it - doesn't feel the need to be applauded for actions, is alrwady proud of them I believe that Salinger is emphasizing the stark differences between the mature and the immature man in this paradox. I interpret this excerpt as stating that the mature man wants to positively impact the world, work hard and act in a heroic manner without being recognized for his actions. Conversely, I believe that this excerpt is describing the immature man as someone who wants the 'easy way out' of being perceived as heroic and great by others, through dying. This idea is incredibly flawed as the immature man desires having others look up to him and his actions. However, this would only be in his legacy as he would never be able to actually experience these feelings due to his death. This misunderstanding thus makes his thought immature since he was unable to consider the full ramifications of his decision before carrying it out. Therefore, these two individuals are very different as one wants recognition without work and effort whereas the other wants to put in work and effort without recognition

How does Salinger use the extended metaphor of the poem "Comin' Thro the Rye"

Holden's interpretation of the poem centers around the loss of innocence (adults and society corrupt and ruin children), and his instinctual desire to protect them (his sister in particular). Holden sees himself as "the catcher in the rye." Throughout the novel, he's confronted with the realities of growing up--of violence, sexuality, and corruption (or "phoniness"), and he doesn't want any part of it. Holden is (in some ways) incredibly naive and innocent about worldly realities. He doesn't want to accept the world as it is, but he also feels powerless, unable to affect change. He wants to "rescue" the children from growing up He can't do anything to stop kids from growing up, utlimately realizesnthis at end of book and begins to grow up

This quote is Holden admitting to himself that he doesn't have any friends or support and that he wishes he had a friend that shared his belief and kept him interested.

hat symbolic of holdens efforts of trying to shield himself from rains of adulthood by rejecting the idea of growing up, considering adults phony was completely soaked, he will have to experience the rains or difficulties of adult no matter how much he rejects it Holden ultimately realizes that his rejection of growing up symbolized by him wearing his hunting hat is not going to protect him from the adult world. While Holden initially thought his hat would keep him from being soaked by the rains of adulthood, this is proved to be false when he is indeed completely soaked. This causes him to understand that he will have to deal with the struggles of adulthood as he grows up, even if he continue to reject it. This leads to a realization that trying to not grow up has no benefit.
