A group of Mexican Americans from New Mexico, Arizona, Texas who had land stripped from them by ranchers and they fought back using guerrilla warfare techniques to show anger and frustration
What was the Pendleton Civil Service Act? What led to its passage?
A new law stating you can only get a job based on merit. This was the end to the spoils act.
Define poll tax. Why did poll taxes have a particularly negative effect on African Americans?
A tax for every adult who voted. Many of them could not afford to pay the tax and therefore were unable to vote.
Who was William Jennings Bryan? Why did the Populist Party support him?
Democratic candidate for president in 1896 under the banner of "free silver coinage" which won him support of the Populist Party.
Why did the political structure change during the gilded age?
It was an era marked by inaction and political corruption. Presidents were elected only by a slim margins. This made it difficult to pass new laws.
What was the gold standard? Which groups and individuals of Americans supported it supported it, which groups and individuals opposed it?
It was the policy of designating monetary units in terms of their value in gold. It was supported by Republicans; not supported by populists.
How were the civil and political rights of certain groups in America undermined during the years after Reconstruction?
They were discriminated and looked down on so life was difficult for them because they didn't have the same rights as the whites
What led to the rise of the Populist movement, and what effect did it have?
Unhappiness with the two major parties. Their ideas will be used later.
compare and contrast Booker T Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois
Washington wanted blacks to focus on working hard and prove themselves as good citizens. Du Bois wanted equality with whites to happen immediately.
