Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

entitles eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for the birth of a child or for the care of a child, spouse, or parent.

National Labor Relations Act of 1935 (Wagner Act)

granted employees the right to unionize, and to bargain collectively. The Wagner Act was created by the NLRB to oversee employer practices and ensure that employees receive their rights

Davis-Bacon Act

Davis-Bacon Act (1931) law sets wage rates for laborers employed by contractors working for the federal government

Exemp/Npn-exempt

Specific categories of employees are exempt from the FLSA or certain provisions of the act, and particularly from the act's overtime provisions—they are exempt employees. If an employee is exempt from the FLSA's minimum wage provision, then he or she is also exempt from its overtime pay provisions. Identifying exemptions is tricky. Pg 292

Employees vs. Independent Contractors

Whether a person is an employee or an independent contractor is a continuing issue for employers. As a general rule, an individual is an independent contractor if the payer has the right to control or direct only the result of the work and not what will be done and how it will be done

Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA)

a law that provides government protection of pensions for all employees with company pension plans. It also regulates vesting rights (employees who leave before retirement may claim compensation from the pension plan).

The Equal Pay Act (1963)

an amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act designed to require equal pay for women doing the same work as men.

Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act

makes it unlawful for employers to discriminate against any individuals with respect to hiring, compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938

provides for minimum wages, maximum hours, overtime pay, and child labor protection. The law, amended many times, covers most employees
