Light and Sound Exam 1
Distance and displacement are different quantities. Suppose I start from the Snow building and I travel to Idaho Falls. Then, I return to the Snow building. What is my displacement for the round trip?
0 miles
You are sitting in the testing center taking a test. Correctly using all of Newton's laws, please describe what is happening to you.
1) An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon: I am sitting in a chair and I am not moving from this chair unless there is a force that pushes me out of the chair or makes me fall through the chair. The keys on the keyboard don't move until the force of my fingers pushes them down and causes them to move. 2) Force=Mass * Acceleration: There are forces pushing on me from every direction, but because I am not moving from my seat, the net force is zero. For example I just pushed my mouse across the desk. We could calculate the amount of force that I used if we knew the mass of the mouse and the acceleration. 3) For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction: Every time that I push down on the mouse, the same amount of force that I used to click down, is the exact amount of force that is used to bring the left click button back up.
What definition below best describes the word perception as used in our class?
A subjective interpretation of environmental stimuli
Which of the following is a fundamental quantity in physics?
Mass
Which of the following is a derived quantity in physics?
Velocity
I get in my car in the morning. It is not moving. I start the engine and step on the gas. In 10 s my speed is 14 m/s. What was my acceleration?
1.4 m/s^2
I throw a ball from the outfield to the pitcher's mound. It travels a distance of about 54 m. The ball travels for about three seconds. How fast does the ball go?
18m/s
You push on a box with a mass of 50 kg. The box accelerates with an acceleration of 5 m/s^2. There are no other forces acting on your box (no friction, no gravitation, etc.). How hard must you be pushing?
250N
I traveled to Idaho Falls, which is 30 miles away, and it took me 30 minutes. What was my average speed?
60 miles/hr
You are visiting the Spori Art Gallery. Describe the parts of the perception process/cycle involved in viewing the paintings. Please answer in complete sentences with correct grammar.
Environmental Stimuli: There may be many paintings or sculptures around me. They are in my environment. I know that they are there, but I am not necessarily paying specific attention to them. Attended Stimulus: I chose to pay attention to one painting in particular. We could say for example that it was an oil painting of a fruit basket. Stimulus on the Receptors: The light from the painting lands on my eyes but it isn't until transdution that my brain is able to begin recognizing what it is that I am looking at. Transduction: This is where the light from the stimulus is transformed into electrochemical signals that my brain can recognize. Processing: My brain begins to process the signals that it has been given. There are different colors, textures and my brain is processing them in this step. Perception: My brain interprets that the painting is something specific. Recognition: It isn't until this step that I am able to recognize that the painting is of a fruit basket. Action: I walk towards that painting to read it's description and find out more about it. Knowledge: My knowledge about fruit in the past could impact the way that I view the painting. I might think that the fruit in the painting looks very realistic and it makes me think of my grandmother that gave me a fruit basket every year on my birthday.
This course covers three branches of science. Which of the following is not one of the sciences that we study in this course?
Geology
I am an astronaut and I have traveled far from any other object in space, except a baseball. If I throw the baseball, which of the following best describes the speed and direction of the ball? Assume my mass is much bigger than the baseball.
It will go straight and it's speed won't change??
Which part of the perceptual process is very different from the rest because it affects more than one other part of the cycle?
Knowledge
Is there a universal zero point to the universe that is the center of all reference frames?
No
I drive my car toward Idaho Falls, which means I am going South. At one point, my acceleration direction is North. What am I doing?
Slowing down
I gather the last row of our class to come push on a box at the front of the room. The back row surrounds the box and pushes, but the box does not move. What is the net force on the box?
The net force is zero, since the box is not accelerating.
You are sitting in a chair taking a test (really, you probably are). There is a downward force on you due to the Earth's gravity. Newton's third law says there must be a force that is the same strength and the opposite direction that forms part of a force pair. What is that other force?
Your upward gravitational pull on the Earth.
