Mood
A general atmosphere or feeling of a narrative.
Narrator
A person who tells the story.
Imagery
It is the use of figurative language to create visual representations of actions, objects and ideas in our mind in such a way that they appeal to our physical senses.
Irony
It is use of the words in such a way in which the intended meaning is completely opposite to their literal meaning.
Euphemism
It is using a milder word or phrase for something that otherwise may be too harsh, blunt, or inappropriate.
Flashback
It is when an author returns to something that happened in the past which often adds important information or an explanation.
Symbolism
It is when an author using one thing to represent something else.
Foreshadowing
It is when the author hints at things to come in a narrative piece.
Direct Characterization and Indirect Characterization
It refers to a character that changes and grows throughout a literary work.
Dynamic Character
It refers to a character that changes by the end of the novel. This does NOT refer to a physical change. It is an INTERNAL CHANGE.
Static Character
It refers to a character that stays the same throughout the novel.
Alliteration
It refers to the same consonant sounds in words coming together.
Setting
It refers to the time and place in which a story takes place.
Point of View
Refers to the narrator being FIRST or THIRD Point of View (Usually).
Simile
Comparing two distinct objects and drawing similarities between them USING "like" or "as."
Metaphor
Comparing two distinct objects and drawing similarities between them WITHOUT using "like" or "as."
Personification
It gives a thing, an idea or an animal human qualities.
Allegory
It is a literary technique in which an abstract idea is given a form of characters, actions, or events. It can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning.
Idiom
It is a peculiar expression or saying that is common to native speakers of a particular language.
Allusion
It is a reference to another work, such as the Bible, mythology, literary character.
Onomatopoeia
It is a word that represents a sound.
Conflict
It is an issue or problem in a narrative around which the whole story revolves.
Theme
It is central idea or concept of a story.
Hyperbole
It is deliberate exaggeration of actions and ideas for the sake of emphasis.
Antagonist
It is the character in conflict with the Protagonist.
Plot
It is the logical sequence of events that develops a story.
Protagonist
It is the main character of story, novel or a play.
Dialogue
Where characters of a narrative speak to one another.
