Cardiac: (reflects K+ levels and cardiac response) -hypovolemic shock; check skin -tachycardia -assess blood (glucose) and urine tests (ketones) -risk of thrombosis due to severe hyperosmolarity; subq heparin prophylactically Note: there will be a slight temperature elevation in the beginning and the skin will feel hot and dry want the pt more alert/oriented After DKA is corrected: determine the cause; most common is infection
