MIW
SLQ-60 SMNS
15-60 min flight time with onboard sonar and camera. Visual ID and neutralization
-Combat -Training -ID
3 types of rounds on SLQ-60 SMNS
Mine Threat Area (MTA)
A general term used to indicate an area in which a credible threat exists from enemy mining
Non-mine minelike bottom object (NOMBO)
A minelike object classified as non-mine
Mine Like Contact (MILCO)
A sonar contact detected and classified as minelike. Determination as to wheter the object is a mine or non-mine can only be done through visual ID by a mine neutralization vehicle (MNV) or a diver.
Mine Like Echo (MILEC)
A sonar echo selected as being minelike by sonar ops or automatic processing during the detection phase.
Defensive Mining
-Adversary Access -Freedom of navigation -Laid in extraterritorial, neutral, or friendly waters -Neutral countries have the right to protect self
Offensive Mining
-Restrict movement of ships and subs -Make shipping routes hazardous -Divert shipping routes -Deny waterway access -Augment military assets to reduce enemy threats
-Contact -Controlled -Influence
Actuation methods (3)
-Inexpensive and cost effective -Relatively safe and reduce changes of: retaliotory action, enemy pursuit, casualties from counter fire -Element of surprise -Used 24 h/ day -Psychological effect -Multiple delivery methods -Preemtive defensive
Advantages of MIW (7)
Mine Danger Area (MDA)
An area drawn around the position of each discovered mine, providing an initial estimate of the minefield
MK106 SPU-1 MOP and MK2 "rattlebars"
Combination minesweeping (2)
-Main (M) -Forecastle (F) -Quarterdeck (Q) -Longitudinal (L) -Athwartship (A)
Degaussing Coils (5)
Remote Minehunting System (WLD-1)
Diesel powered, unmanned, autonomous semi-submersible, high endurance, low-viz system to hunt mines. Two remote multi-mission vehicles (RMMV) in LCS MIW package Capable of LOS and OTH ops
-Passive weapons -Poor Intel -Depth Restrictions -Dangerous removal
Disadvantages of MIW (4)

Influence minesweeping (3)
SLW-38 MK103
Mechanical Minesweeping methods (2)
-Magnetic (degaussing) -Acoustic (quiet ship/ prairie/masker air) -Seismic (dampening, tactics) -Pressure (tactics) -Other
Mine Protection Systems (5)
-Final Pos'n in water -Method of actuation -Delivery platform
Mine classification categories (3)
