Extrusion reflex

- Disappears about 4 months - newborn will throwout any substance placed on the anterior portion of tongue. protective reflex prevents the swallowing of inedible stuff.

rooting reflex

- Disappears about the 6th week of life-eyes able to focus steadily and food source can be seen - when newborn's cheek is brushed or stroked near the corner of the mouth. infant will turn head in direction to find food.

sucking reflex

- Disappears @ about 6 months - Disappears immediately if it's never stimulated when baby's lips are touched and it makes a sucking motion. IE... tracheoesophageal fistula/atresia-unable to take fluids

Planter grasp reflex

- disappears @ about 8-9 months in prep for walking - when object touches sole of newborn's foot @ base of toes and they grasp like fingers

Babinski reflex

- disappears about 1 year of age - response occurs r/t immature nervous system - newborn fans the toes (+ sign) & great toe dorsiflexion - formation of inverted "J" of toes when foot is stroked on side of sole *fine in infants, not good in adults

Palmer Grasp Reflex

- disappears about 6 weeks to 3 months - baby begins to grasp meaningfully @ about 3 months of age - grasping an object placed in baby's palm

tonic neck (fencing) reflex

- disappears between 2nd & 3rd month - newborn on back with head turned to 1 side. Arm and leg on the side to which the head turns, extend and the opposite arm and leg contract

Stepping Reflex

- disappears by 3 months - newborns who are held vertically with feet touching surface looking like they walking

Moro (startle) reflex

- it's the 1st 8 weeks of life & then fades by teh end of 4th or 5th month - when you startle a newborn - abduction & extension of arms & legs, fingers form C's, then brin arms together as if to embrace & pull up legs against abd

Trunk incurvation reflex

- when a newborn lies in a prone position and is touched along the paravertebral area on the back by probing finger, the newborn flexes the trunk and swings the pelvis toward the touch - test of spinal cord integrity
