-Age >50 year old women -Sex (women) -Genetics(family history) -Ethnicity, race (White, Asian are at higher risk) -History of fractures
Why do more women have osteoporosis than men?(Hormones)
-Estrogen and testosterone , maintains bone mass -Menopause, significant reduction in bone density
Why do more women have osteoporosis than men? (Childhood)
-Females mature sooner, Males have more time to develop bones -Females less active than males
Ways in which PA reduces risk of osteoporosis
-Increase peak bone mass -Slows decline of bone mass -Reduces risk of falling
Modifiable
-Physical inactivity -Tobacco use -Thin or underweight -Low sex hormones -Nutrition, low Vitamin D and calcium
Why do more women have osteoporosis than men?
-When women go through menopause they are losing sex hormones -Women weigh less than men, putting less stress on their bone tissue -Tend to have less bone tissue/muscle mass than men
