In class we created a standing wave. Explain what is happening to the string to create a standing wave.

****

Your friend's cell phone is ringing at 6,000Hz as he runs past you at 4m/s. You are walking at 3m/s in the same direction. Assuming sound travels at 340m/s, what frequency will you hear after your friend passes you?

****

If the rope makes 120 complete vibrations in 1.5 minutes, and the wave travels 3m in those 1.5 minutes, What is the wavelength of the wave?

0.025m

A weight suspended from a spring bobs up and down over a distance of 1 meter in 2 seconds its frequency is

0.5Hz

Your pendulum has a string length of 60cm. What is its period?

1.54 seconds

A floating leaf oscillates up and down two complete cycles in one second as a water wave passes by. The wave's wavelength is 10 meters. What is the wave's speed?

20 m/s

Why does mass affect the period of a spring?

As the mass increases, inertia increases. Because the inertia has increased, it takes a longer time and distance to stop the mass and begin its motion in the opposite direction.

What will using a larger amplitude do to the period of a pendulum.

It will not affect the pendulum. As the amplitude increases, so does the PE (mgh) If the Pe increases, then the resulting KE at the equilibrium point will also increase. This increase in speed cancels out the greater amplitude, leaving no charge in the period.

A standing wave occurs when

a wave reflects upon itself

A bow wave is produced when a wave source moves

as fast as the wave it produces

The vibrations of a transverse wave move in a direction

at right angles to the direction of wave travel

At a concert the oboe is playing a long steady note as you walk away from the stage at an accelerating velocity toward the rest room. The pitch of the sound that you hear is

continually decreasing

A Doppler effect occurs when a source of sound moves

either towards/away from you

If you double the frequency of a vibrating object, its period

halves

The frequency of a simple pendulum depends on

its length, and the acceleration due to gravity

Wave interference occurs for

light waves, water waves, sound waves

The Doppler effect is a characteristic of

light, water, and sound waves

An anti-node is a position of

maximum amplitude

As a supersonic craft increases in speed, the angle of its V-shaped shock wave becomes

narrower

During a single period, the distance traveled by a wave is

one wavelength

An aircraft that flies faster than the speed of sound is said to be

supersonic

For light, a red shift indicates that the light source is moving

toward you
