vector quantity
A quantity that has both magnitude and direction. Magnitude is simply the size or amount of the quantity. For example, the magnitude of the quantity 8 mph is 8. Examples of a vector quantity is used in physics include velocity, acceleration, force, a lift, and weight.
base-height ratio
A ration of the Air base (ground distance) divided by aircraft height of an aerial photo. This ratio determines vertical exaggeration on stereo models. As it increases the disparity between apparent horizontal and vertical scales also increases.

A recorded legal document giving constructive notice that an action affecting a particular property has been filed in either a state or a federal court.
Cartesian

A small tract usually between two patents that does not appear on the states land register. Interested applicants can apply with the county surveyor to begin the process.

Certified federal surveyor
A surveyor's additional endorsement for boundary work for BIA, Tribes and adjacent Indian Trust Lands in addition to the State Certification.
Automatic level
A surveyor's level whose line of sight is automatically maintained in the horizontal plane, once the instrument is roughly leveled.

NGVD29
A vertical datum known as the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. It was renamed from The Sea Level Datum in 1976 because it does not accurately represent mean sea level. The datum was based on 26 tidal stations along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coast. It involved 100,000 km of leveling across US.
Dynamic Height
A way of specifying the height of a point above a reference, as opposed to orthometric height or normal height. Used when working with the level of water over a large geographic area, and is used by the Great Lakes Datum.
Average End Area Method
A way to find volume based on the assumption that the volume of earthwork between two vertical cross sections is equal to the average of the two end areas multiplied by the horizontal distance between them. The end areas are computed by dividing the area into triangles and trapezoids. Swell and shrinkage must also be factored in.

An Intendente Was an individual of judicial, military, and or administrative authority of a given district or administrative unit. Large regions were further divided into smaller districts, and each of these districts were governed by an Intendente. The order of 1786 stated these Intensentes were permitted to grant land.
Compass Rule
An adjustment of a traverse where distances and angles collected with same degree of confidence and precision. Gives nearly same accuracy as least squares. It is used in the majority of traverses. Property line agreement
An agreement between neighboring land owners on a property lines location. The survey or should make sure there is uncertainty from both parties concerning the exact location of the deeded property line.The courts have consistently held that the parties may decide location of their common boundary as long as they are both uncertain of its original location and are both satisfied and clear about the line they settle up on.

Parallax
An apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from different locations. In astronomical surveying it is the difference between the apparent position of a celestial body as it would be seen from the center of the earth and as seen from the observers location. Corrections are always added.

An easement in Gross is attached to the person of the easement holder, and an easement Appurtenant is not. An easement Appurtenant passes with the transfer of the land to which it is attached; an easement in Gross does not.

Grants awarded for military service during the revolution (law of 1837). Amount of land depends on the length of service: 320 acres for every three months of service up to 1280 acres. Soldiers were also awarded 240 acres regarding the frontier.

Grants issued For participation in specific battles: Siege of Bexar, battle at San Jacinto, and those who fell at the Alamo and Goliad are eligible for 640 acres.

Colonization Law
In 1824, Mexican congress passed a National Colonization Law allowing states to make their own colonization laws, with certain limitations. Titles could not exceed 11 leagues per person. No land could be granted with 20 leagues (50 miles) of an international boundary l, or with 10 leagues (25 miles) of the coast, without special permission from Mexican government. Required boundary corners tied to trees, bearings based on true north, and not more than 2500 varas of river frontage.

Refraction
The bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another. For example, the bending of light through the earths atmosphere that makes celestial objects appear higher in the sky than its true altitude. Refraction corrections are always subtracted from the observed altitude.

General Land Office
Office that was created by an act in 1836, approved by the people in 1837, began operation in 1838. Its primary tasks include handling public lands, and collection of royalties and other incomes from the public school lands. Prior to 1887 conveyances from the state or were not required to be filed in the county deed records. First commissioner was John Borden. Another notable commissioner was Charles Rogan 1902, because he identified the problem where county commissioners were classifying all land in a way to make it $1 per acre which led to the creation of the highest bidder law.
