Citizen participation, equality, political tolerance, accountability, transparency, regular free and fair elections, economic freedom, control of the abuse of power, Bill of Rights, multi-party system and rule of law

Why is the United States a republic and a democracy?

It's a democracy because the people hold the ultimate power. In addition, it's a republic becaused the people have a representative which speaks on the peoples behalf it's ruled by laws and isn't a tyranny or monarchy.
