General Grant drove Confederates from much of western Kentucky & nearly all of Tennessee. Tried to take Vicksburg, lost a battle in SW Tennessee at Shiloh. High death rate from Shiloh horrified both N. & S. The Union navy captured the port of New Orleans days after the battle at Shiloh.

July 1861- Manassas, Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C. Known as Battle of Bull Run in the N. & Battle of Manassas in the S. Union defeat by Confed. Gen. Stonewall Jackson. Taking high casualties, Union lost battles against Confederate Gen. Lee at Fredericksburg (December 1862) & at Chancellorsville, Virginia (May 1863). After Union army failed to defeat Lee, Lincoln appointed various commanders-in-chief. Lee chose to once again invade N. territory to demoralize the Union & force an end to the war.
