Airfield operating instruction AOI

Provides guidance regarding Airfield terminal environment activities that directly affect flying operations at an Air Force Base

Hours of duty

Shift should be 8hrs and not exceed 10 Must have 12 hours between shifts 24 hours following 6 consecutive duty days.

Apprentice/Trainee

3 Skill level, Trains to obtain a facility rating.

Rated Controller

5 Skill level Controls and regulates enroute and terminal air traffic. Initiates and issues ATC clearances, instructions and advisories.

Watch Supervisor (WS)

7 Skill level. Mantains situational awareness of the overall flow or air traffic operations at the facility assigned, supervises ATC functions.

Chief Controller (CCTLR)

9 or 7 skill level. Manages the internal operation of the air traffic facility. Direct supervision of personnel assigned.

Air Traffic Control Tower

A terminal ATC facility,USAF or FAA, that uses air/ground communications, visual signaling, and other devices to provide ATC services to aircraft operating in the vicinity of an airport or on the movement area.

Radar Approach Control (RAPCON)

A terminal USAD ATC facility that uses radar and non radar capabilities to provide approach control services to aircraft arriving, departing, or transiting airspace controlled by the facility. Radar controllers monitor departing aircraft and aircraft making instrument approaches using other navaids. Releases and/or accepts aircraft to and/or from other enroute or terminal ATC facilities.

The ARTCC will handoff arriving aircraft to the RAPCON. The RAPCON will handoff departures to the ARTCC.

How many parts does the training program have?

Four Parts and is designed to standardize the flow of all training.

Guides Design

Guides are designed in a block or blocks of instructions. Tasks are aligned in a logical order for training (simple to complex)

Senior Controller (SC)

Has the same responsibilities as WS and is simultaneously responsible for duties at an operating position.

What are the operating positions for Tower?

Local Control, Ground Control and Flight Data

Use of Alcohol

Must not perform ATC duties, not directly supervise others controllers, while under the influence. (BAC of 0.4 or greater) Must not perform within 12 hrs of consuming any amount. Cannot drink for 12 hrs after incident.Unless given a post accident test.

Requirements to perform Air Traffic Control Duties

Must posses a valid ATCS AOV credential with the appropriate facility rating.
