Chapter 12 blood types
RH positive blood can receive
Both RH positive and negative blood
Blood transfusion chart
Type O- can receive only O- Type O+ can receive O- & O+ Type A- can receive O- & A- Type A+ can receive O+ & O-, A+ & A- Type B- can receive O- & B- Type B+ can receive O+ & O-, B+ & B- Type AB- can receive O-, A-, B-, AB- Type AB+ can receive both A+-, B+-, AB+-, O+-
Mixing incompatible blood types can result in what reaction
aggultenation reaction is when the red blood cells connect together to form clumps much like large clots these can be fatal
type o known as the universal donor because it can donate to all of the other blood groups but
can only receive type O
Type O Blood
contains neither A or B antigen on the surface of its blood cell, but contains bot anti-a and anti-B antibody in its plasma
RBC can also contain the RH antigen (antigen D)
if an RH antigen is present the blood is RH positive if no RH antigen is present it is RH negative
if an RH- mom has an RH+ baby, if the blood mixes at birth mom can develope antibodies against RH+ blood. so if mom has a second pregnancy with an RH+ baby what happens
moms antibodies could attack the babies red blood cells this is called Hemolytic desease of the newborn.
RH negative blood can receive
only Rh negative blood
The blood type is determined by the
presence of antigens on the surface of red blood cells
Type AB is know as
the universal recipient because it can recieve all blood types A. AB, B and O
if someone with RH- blood recieves a transfusion with someone with RH+ blood
they can develope antibodies (anti RH antibodies) that attack red blood cells
It is important to learn about blood types
to avoid serious complications when blood is transfused
Type A blood has the
type A antigen on the surface of its blood cell, it also contains the anti-b antibody in its plasma
Type AB blood has the
type AB antigen on the surface of its blood cell, it also DOES NOT contain the anti-A antibody or anti-B antibody in its plasma
Type B blood has the
type B antigen on the surface of its blood cell, it also contains the anti-A antibody in its plasma
type A blood can receive
types A and O
type B blood can receive
types B and O
