Enrichment
Provide students with opportunity to go beyond the regular curriculum in greater depth and breadth to engage in independent or collaborative inquiry which can develop their problem saving ability, research skills and creativity
Teaching implications
-Address varied intelligence Garner emphasizes learning in context, through apprenticeship, student development in an area like music, fostered through hands -psychologists have criticized Garner based on the lack of scientific measures for Garner's various intelligence
Glasser's Choice theory
-Begins with the premise that each of us is born with fundamental needs for survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun -throughout our lives our motivations, actions and behavior are attempts to satisfy these needs -teachers should empower their students through the use of students with classroom assignments/ activities -Convinced that schoolwork satisfies their needs, the harder they will try and the better the work they produce
Sources of Student Diversity
-Come from different racial and ethnic backgrounds -Speak another language other than english -boys and girls are different even from same backgrounds -all backgrounds will have gay/ lesbians
Inclusion
-Commitment to educate each child to the maximum extent appropriate in the regular school and classroom -Recent years full inclusion argued that separated education for students with disabilities inherently unequal
Preschool legislation
-Education of the handicapped Act Amendment passed in 1986, provided early intervention for children from birth to age two who are developmentally delayed -stated that FAPE must be extended to children with disabilities ages 3-5 years
Teaching Implications
-Schools' middle-class cultures often places students from other cultures at a disadvantage in understanding the schools' culture codes and communication styles -Knowing and understanding your students' cultural backgrounds can help you make your classroom more inviting and can increase their academic achievement
Racial, Ethic, Cultural Diversity
-Teacher encounter increasing cultural diversity -Also will encounter more students whose native language is not english -reflect hispanic and asian heritage
Multicultural Education
-may destroy any sense of common tradition values purpose and obligations, thereby a more fragmented and contentious

IDEA and ADA (six principles)

Least restrictive environment (LRE) -Students with disabilities should be educational with children without disabilities to the greatest extent appropriate 4. Teaching implications
1. recognize that gifted pupils generally learn the standard curricular skills and content quickly and easily 2. Realize that these students are persistently curious 3. Teach these pupils to be efficient and effective at independent study do that they can develop the skills required for self-directed learning an analyzing 4. help students apply complex cognitive process such as creative thinking, critiques and pro and con analysis 5.Expand your ideas concerning which instructional materials are available 6. Use differentiated instructional strategies such as flexible grouping, tiered assignments, learning centers, student contracts and mentorships 7. Implement curriculum compacting 8. Match students with mentors to help develop talent and engage students in relevant and applied problem solving

Submersion
Extra case of immersion, sink or swim until they learn english
Acceleration
Gifted can learn at a pace commensurate with their abilities allowing them to progress to advanced materials faster than age norms or grade level
Gifted and Talented Students
Gifted/talented students are sometimes overlooked when educators talk about students w/ special needs -When needs are neglected gifted and talented students drop out of school at race for exceeding the dropout rates for those not identified as gifted
Transitional
Intense English language instruction but students get same position of academic interaction in their native language
Immersion
Learn everything in English. Simple and understanding lessons
Mainstreaming
Practicing of placing special education in general education classes for at least part of the school day with additional services program classes being provided to these students as needed
Special Education
Used to designate services designed for students with disabilities each special education student must have an IEP
