Computer Hardware Quiz
Artificial Intelligence
A branch of computer science which tries to simulate aspects of human intelligence, including the ability to learn from experience and to use reason to solve a problem or respond to a new situation
ALU
Arithmetic/Logic Unit; capable of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing two numbers
CPU
Central Processing Unit; the "brain" of the computer that performs most computing tasks. In microcomputers, the entire Central Processing Unit is on a single chip; also called a processor
Von Nueman Model
Contains central Processing Unit; control unit; ALU; goes to and receives memory unit; receives input device; gives output device
6 D's
Define- to truly understand the problem Discover-research Design-creating a plan for the solution Deliver-make and present Debrief-fix problems, feedback
storage
In computing, any device in which (or on which) information is held; data, info, files, codes
4 basic components of a computer
Input; Output; Processing; Storage
RAM
Random Access Memory; the memory that is available on a computer for storing data and programs. It is automatically erased when the power is turned off. Information in the Random Access Memory that needs to be stored for future use must be saved onto a disk or tape.
ROM
Read Only Memory; a system's permanent, stored instructions, which are never changed; it holds its contents even when the power is tuned off. Data is placed in Read Only Memory only once, and stays there permanently. Read Only Memory is generally installed by the manufacturer as part of the system.
output
The computer-generated information that is displayed to the user in some discernible form such as a screen display, printed, page, or sound; component that gets info out.
Input
The data that is entered into a computer; physical device that accepts data and puts it into a computer
processing
The manipulation of data by a microprocessor or embedded processor according to instructions given to it by a program or embedded in the chip itself
Ada Byron King
considered the "mother of computer programming"; programmer for Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage
designed mechanical calculating machines; his ultimate calculator is called the Analytical Engine; "Father of Computing"
hardware
the physical parts of the computer system that you can touch and feel such as the keyboard, monitor, and computer case
software
the programs and data that make computer hardware function
