Artificial Intelligence

A branch of computer science which tries to simulate aspects of human intelligence, including the ability to learn from experience and to use reason to solve a problem or respond to a new situation

ALU

Arithmetic/Logic Unit; capable of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing two numbers

CPU

Central Processing Unit; the "brain" of the computer that performs most computing tasks. In microcomputers, the entire Central Processing Unit is on a single chip; also called a processor

Von Nueman Model

Contains central Processing Unit; control unit; ALU; goes to and receives memory unit; receives input device; gives output device

In computing, any device in which (or on which) information is held; data, info, files, codes

4 basic components of a computer

Input; Output; Processing; Storage

RAM

Random Access Memory; the memory that is available on a computer for storing data and programs. It is automatically erased when the power is turned off. Information in the Random Access Memory that needs to be stored for future use must be saved onto a disk or tape.

ROM

Read Only Memory; a system's permanent, stored instructions, which are never changed; it holds its contents even when the power is tuned off. Data is placed in Read Only Memory only once, and stays there permanently. Read Only Memory is generally installed by the manufacturer as part of the system.

output

The computer-generated information that is displayed to the user in some discernible form such as a screen display, printed, page, or sound; component that gets info out.

Input

The data that is entered into a computer; physical device that accepts data and puts it into a computer

processing

The manipulation of data by a microprocessor or embedded processor according to instructions given to it by a program or embedded in the chip itself
