Convection currents in the Mantle/Seafloor spreading
Convection currents in the mantle
Hotter rock moves upward, while cooler rock moves downward
What causes seafloor spreading?
molten material pushing through the mid-ocean ridge, cooling on the seafloor, causing the seafloor to spread.
outer core
A layer of molten iron and nickel that surrounds the inner core of Earth
Convection currents
Circular movement of a substance due to changes in temperature and density
Mantle
The layer of rock between the Earth's crust and core
Density
The measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume.
seafloor spreading
The process that creates new sea floor as plates move away from each other at the mid-ocean ridges
Lithosphere
The rigid outer layer of Earth, including the crust and upper mantle
Aesthenosphere
The soft layer of the mantle on which the lithosphere floats.
Radiation
The transfer of energy through space. There is no contact between the particles.
Convection
The transfer of heat energy by the circular movement of material caused by differences in temperature and density.
Conduction
The transfer of heat from one particle of matter to another. The particles are in contact with each other.
Heat transfer
the movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object, there are 3 types of hear transfer: conduction, convection and radiation.
