John Roberts Jr.

Chief Justice nominated in 2006 by George W. Bush to replace William Rehnquist, Conservative, second youngest member of the Supreme Court.

Anthony Kennedy

Justice nominated in 1987 by Ronald Reagan; currently moderate (slightly conservative) swing-vote on the court ,"wildcard". This justice has surprised many of us with his stance on a case dealing with abortion since the justice is a devout Roman Catholic. Was the crucial deciding vote in Casey upholding women's right to privacy.

Clarence Thomas

Justice nominated in 1991 by George H.W. Bush, most conservative justice on the court and clearly had one of the most scruntinized confirmation hearings after being accused of sexual harrassment by a former staffer. A firm believer of originalism.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Justice nominated in 1993 by Bill Clinton, while not the president's first selection this justice has become one of the most liberal justices to serve on the bench. Has suffered from several bouts of cancer but insists of serving for at least 3 more years.

Stephen Breyer

Justice nominated in 1994 by Bill Clinton, perhaps on the most liberal of all of the justices on the court. Maintains a very low key on the court and almost didn't get appointed due to a poor first interview with the president.

Samuel Alito

Justice nominated in 2006 by George W. Bush to replace Sandra Day O'Connor; solid conservative vote on the court who ruled in favor of all of the restrictions in Casey case at the appellate level prior to the Supreme Court decision.

Sonia Sotomayor

Justice nominated in 2009 by Barrack Obama, has tended to be a reliable liberal vote on the court. Was confirmed relatively quickly to the bench after many years as a Justice on the Federal Court of Appeals and is the first Hispanic Justice in the history of the Court.

Elena Kagen

Justice nominated in 2010 by Barrack Obama to replace Paul Stevens and is the youngest member of the Supreme Court. Has experience arguing in front of the court as a former solicitor general but has no experience on the bench.
