Britain needed to pay for the troops they sent to the colonies and to pay for the French and Indian war so they put lots of taxes on the 13 colonies in order to raise money

1. Describe the causes and effects of the Declaration of Independence and the American revolution

Causes Britain was making all the laws the colonists had to live by without the colonists first agreeing to them. The colonists were against this and wanted to make their own laws so they declared their independence from Britain Effects The effect of the Declaration of Independence was to clearly communicate to the British what the colonists believe were the basic principles of freedom and the rights they felt all people should have. The effect was also to declare to the British that the colonists were now independent from Britain and would start making their own laws.

Causes The colonists felt Britain was making too many unfair laws and taxes that violated their rights IE: rights like: • A trial by jury • Assumption of being innocent until proven guilty • No taxes unless the colonists first agreed to them

Definition Unalienable rights are NATURAL RIGHTS that people of born with and nobody can take away from them Examples Life Liberty The pursuit of happiness

The American allies helped the colonists by: • Giving money, • Giving supplies • Giving soldiers to help the colonists fight against the British

The Declaration of Independence reflected the beliefs of the patriots by: • Stating why the colonies were unhappy with Britain, • Stating what "inalienable" rights they thought they had • Stating why the colonies wanted their independence from Britain

The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson on behalf of the Second Continental Congress. Jefferson was speaking for the body of congressional representatives to state the grievances and severing of political ties from the British government."
