1856

In 1856, philanthropist and former United States Postmaster General Amos Kendall became aware of several deaf and blind children in Washington, D.C., who were not receiving proper care.

1986 Renaming

In 1986, Congress again amended the charter of the Institution, renaming it Gallaudet University

Programs

Deaf and hard of hearing undergraduates can choose from more than 40 majors leading to a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. The University also admits a small number of hearing, degree-seeking undergraduate students—six percent limit for FY 2014, seven percent limit for FY 2015, and eight percent limit for FY 2016. Undergraduate students also have the option of designing their own majors, called "self-directed majors," in which they select classes from a variety of departments at Gallaudet or take courses offered at 12 other institutions of higher learning that are members of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area.

Fun fact

Edward Miner Gallaudet, the son of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, founder of the first school for deaf students in the United States, became the new school's superintendent. Congress authorized the institution to confer college degrees in 1864, and President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill into law.

Hearing students?

People always are what and where they are. There are oral deaf, deaf from deaf families, deaf from hearing families, children of deaf adults (CODAs), hearing students, new signers — you name it — at Gallaudet. They make the deaf community at Gallaudet. The problem is the lack of acceptance on campus.

Thomas Hopkins

American pioneer in deaf education. He was hard of hearing. Gallaudet University was named in honor of him in 1894. A statue of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Alice Cogswell created by Daniel Chester French sits at the front of Gallaudet University.
