Harmony

A result of balanced color relationships. Can be defined as a pleasing arrangement of parts, whether it be music, poetry, color, or even an ice cream sundae.

Focal Point

An area in a display that attracts attention first, above all else. (Another name for emphasis)

CMYK and RGB

CMYK stands for 4-color process printing and is good for printing brochures and books. RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue and is good for web use only or on computer screen.

Analogous Color

Colors that are side by side on the color wheel and share a hue.

Emphasis

Drawing special interest to the most important part of an artwork. (Focal Point)

HTML

HyperText Markup Language, the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web.

Balance

The arrangement of the parts of an artwork to give an overall sense of equality in visual weight. Formal - an imaginary line of symmetry. Informal - an asymmetrical layout is used. Radial - the pattern "radiates" from the center point.

Unity

The combination of all elements working together to achieve a sense of harmony in your design; grouping related items close together

Message

The determining factor in deciding if an image is graphic design.

Resolution

The number of pixels per square inch on a image, vector, graphic, or photo. For Example: 300(print) is high res and 72(web) is low res.

Movement

The principle of art used to create the look and feeling of action and to guide the viewer's eyes throughout the work of art

Proportion

The relationship of size between objects.

Secondary Colors

When two primary colors are combined, the result is a secondary color. They are green, orange and violet.

Logo

a symbol or design that serves to identify an organization or institution

Graphic Design

a visual representation of an idea that relies on the creation, selection, and organization of visual elements to create an effective communication

Hue

actual name of the color

Corporate Identity

focus on creating and maintaining a positive company image, use the media to advertise, promotional, and business cards

Adobe Creative Suite

is a collection of graphic design, video editing, and web development applications made by Adobe Systems. The collection consists of Adobe's applications (e.g., Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign), that are based on various technologies (e.g., PostScript, PDF, Flash).

Repetition

n. The act of repeating a visual effect in a design or artwork. (Pattern)

Primary Colors

red, yellow, and blue: the colors from which all other colors can be mixed and can't be remade.

Complementary Color

the color opposite from another color on the color wheel, i.e. red and green

Marketing

the commercial processes involved in promoting and selling and distributing a product or service

Contrast

the relationship between the light and dark areas of an image

Typography

the study of all elements of type as a means of visual communication

Composition

the way the principles of art are used to organize the elements of art
