Hormones in the menstrual cycle
What does FSH do?
>causes an egg to mature in an ovary >it stimulates the ovaries to release the hormone oestrogen
Several hormones control the menstrual cycle, which includes...
>controlling the release of an egg each month from an ovary >changing the thickness of the uterus lining
What does oestrogen do?
>it stops FSH being produced - so that only one egg matures in a cycle >it stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH), which triggers ovulation (the release of the mature egg from the ovary).
What does progesterone do?
>maintains the lining of the womb, supplying it with blood, ready for the release of an egg
What hormones are in fertility drugs and why?
FSH because the woman probably doesn't produce enough FSH to allow their eggs to mature and so FSH stimulates eggs to mature in the ovary.
luteinizing hormone (LH)
Peeks rapidly around day 14 to cause ovulation in conjunction with FSH and causes ovulation (makes it reproduce); makes the ovaries reproduce and develop the ovum
What happens if the pregnancy does not happen?
the lining is shed at menstruation.
Corpus Lectern
The scar left by the follicle- means 'yellow body'
The hormones are secreted by...
the ovaries and the pituitary gland.
Menstrual cycle
a recurring monthly process in which the lining of the uterus (the womb) is prepared for pregnancy.
Oestrogen
controls the development of female secondary sexual characteristics
Oestrogen
encourages the lining of the womb to develop
Oestrogen
found in most contraceptive pills because it inhibits the release of FSH
Progesterone
found in most contraceptive pills because it suppresses the level of oestrogen which hinders the development of the follicle into a mature ovum
What is human fertility controlled by?
hormones.
FSH
important in IVF for stimulating ovaries, the development of the ovum.
Oestrogen
is secreted by the ovaries.
Progesterone
is secreted by the ovaries.
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
is secreted by the pituitary gland.
Oestrogen
is the process of egg release
What hormones are used in oral contraceptives and why?
oestrogen, or oestrogen and progesterone as these hormones inhibit the production of FSH, which in turn stops eggs maturing in the ovaries.
Progesterone
prevents contractions until a baby is born
Oestrogen
regulates menstrual cycle
