Melanin

Location: Deep in the skin (only in Stratum Basale layer) Melanin is a pigment produced by Melanocytes; Melanin protects cells from UV rays; Melanin is deposited into keratinocytes

Keratin

Location: nearly all cells in the epidermis Keratin is produced by keratinocytes by filling themselves up with Keratin then no longer function and they die; Keratin remains inside the cell

Apocrine Glands

Sweat glands in the pubic, axillary, and breast areola that secrete thicker sweat, that produce odor when come in contact with bacteria on the skin

Thin Skin

Covers most of the body except palms of the hands and soles of the feet; has hair; has no lucidum

Thick Skin

Covers the palms of the hands and soles of the feet; has no hair; has an extra layer of stratum lucidum which is 2-3 layers

Sweat Glands

The glands that secrete sweat, located in the dermal layer of the skin. There are two types of sweat glands; Eccrine and Apocrine Glands

Eccrine Glands

Thin-watery sweat with no smell; sweat all over body; ducts end in pores; more important in temperature regulation

Sebaceous Glands

secrete sebum (oil) into the hair follicles
