Identify the functions of Integumentary System Terms
Melanin
Location: Deep in the skin (only in Stratum Basale layer) Melanin is a pigment produced by Melanocytes; Melanin protects cells from UV rays; Melanin is deposited into keratinocytes
Keratin
Location: nearly all cells in the epidermis Keratin is produced by keratinocytes by filling themselves up with Keratin then no longer function and they die; Keratin remains inside the cell
Apocrine Glands
Sweat glands in the pubic, axillary, and breast areola that secrete thicker sweat, that produce odor when come in contact with bacteria on the skin
Thin Skin
Covers most of the body except palms of the hands and soles of the feet; has hair; has no lucidum
Thick Skin
Covers the palms of the hands and soles of the feet; has no hair; has an extra layer of stratum lucidum which is 2-3 layers
Sweat Glands
The glands that secrete sweat, located in the dermal layer of the skin. There are two types of sweat glands; Eccrine and Apocrine Glands
Eccrine Glands
Thin-watery sweat with no smell; sweat all over body; ducts end in pores; more important in temperature regulation
Sebaceous Glands
secrete sebum (oil) into the hair follicles
