Rule 1

In Spanish, when using nationalities to describe a noun, you need to use the verb "ser." As you may remember, "estar" is used for temporary adjectives, such as emotions which change often; on the other hand, "ser" is used for nationalities because these are permanent and do not change.

Rule 5

Lastly, when a nationality ends on "o" for the masculine form, like with most other words, simply replace the "o" for an "a" to make it feminine.

Select the best Spanish translation for the sentence below: María is not angry.

María no está enojada.

Rule 4

Nationalities that end in "e" are gender neutral, therefore they are the same whether you are describing masculine or feminine nouns. However, they need to have an "s" added for the plural form.

Rule 3

Nationalities that end in a consonant are generally in the masculine form (we say generally because there are very few exceptions). These can be made feminine simply by adding the letter "a" after the consonant (and if there was an accent in the masculine form, it would normally be dropped for the feminine form).
