Programs (Care Calls, handy Wheels, H.O.P.E)

Care Calls- these are phone services that provide a sense of connection for the participants. Terms are phone calls are to be made once a day or twice a week. Handy Wheels- A repair service for the participants. Jobs include: fixing light, setting a home item up. This occurs once a month on Saturdays H.O.P.E- They deliver nonperishable groceries provided by the food bank once a month on Saturdays with collaboration with The capital food bank to receive extra groceries.

Programs (Country Wheels, Meals for kids)

Country Wheels: These are services that provide meals to those that live within the greater Austin areas away from the cities. They deliver once a week with seven meals. Meals for kids: Aimed at low-income children at after- school programs. Provide nutrition meals and education services.

Requirements of the meals, different meal options

Each meal contains 1/3rd of the Recommended Daily Allowances by the federal government In addition, there are six different options for the meals provided

MAWAM (program) (3)

In addition to meal services, they also offer other programs: Meals on Wheels: provides meals, 5 hot meals and 1 frozen meal which arrives from Monday thru Friday 11pm to 1pm. Groceries to go program:Volunteers with less time commitment who shop for their clients 2 times a week for those that can cook but are not mobile to buy their food. Medi-Wheels: This service provides a transportation that allows the clients to be transported to weekly medical appointments

United Action for the Elderly ('72)

MOWAM originally was created and founded in Austin. The name altered due to the fact that they realized that the target ppl they served needed additional services, so hence they changed the name to compliment for the new programs.

Low Sodium Meal

Only contains 1000mg per meal. Those that have kidney disease.

Content of the Meals (who prepares? What is it?)

RDs are the ones that plan the meals and menus. Prepared in a Central Kitchen in East Austin.

The six different meal types

Regular Meals, Soft Meals, Bland Meals, Pureed Meals, Low Sodium, Combination

Second Meals, Client Assistance Program, Mikes' Place

Second Meals- To provide additional meals to those with additional calorie needs. For example: Breakfast meals or additional dinner meals. Client Assistance Program- Program that provides money for their participants in order to pay for their: bills such as rent, utilities, telephones, microwaves Mike's Place- A safe place for individuals with a mental memory disability such as Alzheimer for once a week. In conjugations with a daycare service like.

Congregate Meal Program:

These are aimed at the older elderly adults to eat at a community area so that they can socialize with other remembers. Research suggests that community social settings, increases the rate at which the elder consume their nutritional food intake. meaning that they increase their calorie consumptions.

Goal of Meals on Wheels and More

They hope to serve those that are home-bounded. They do this through providing meals to those in need. It also helps promote independent living. By doing so, it helps keep away to those that do not want to go into nursing homes and help provide a sense of physical connection.

P.A.L.S (Pet assisting the lives of seniors)

This service offers to take care of the members pets. Such as taking them to the vet, walking the dogs, bring food for the members pet. They also receive a monthly supply of pet food. Also once a year there is a service event to get the dogs vaccinated and checked up by a veterinarian.

Who is able to participate in meals on wheels?

Those that are primary home-bound and that cannot prepare meals for themselves. Also those that need consistent help. Short-Term: There are services that can also provide temporary meals for those that need temporary help such as post surgery conditions.

Eligibility for Meals on Wheels and More

Those that are primary home-bound. Do not have consistent help Those that are available during the operation hours Unable to prepare nutritious meals. Living in the greater Austin Area Assessed by a social worker

Soft Meals

Those that can still use the mouths but have a hard time chewing, maybe due to dentures

Combination Meal

Those that have combination of kidney disease and GER

Pureed Meals

Those that have dysphagia or cannot use their teeth to chew

MOWAM is independently ran

Which means that they receive no funds. Most of the help is dependent on the volunteers that serve for them. Funds can come for sponsors or donations as well.
