Significance of the (Chap 10) Arctic Tern

Doug changes the way he sees the Arctic Tern from a bird that used to have a terrified eye on the world, to one that is seeing spectacular things that are coming ahead. As Doug's view of possibilities has changed over time, Doug tells Lil that she should imagine a second Arctic Tern swooping down next to the other and that together they should look for the next spectacular things that are going to come instead of seeing the 1 in 4 chance.

Doug describes the Brown Pelican as noble, stable, and dependable. After a difficult night of babysitting at the Daugherty's house because of Joel's asthma attack, Christopher swoops in to help Doug. Doug initially believes the mama bird isn't noticed by her little ones and could fly away at any point. However, Mrs. Windemere corrects Doug and says that the mama bird is looking for the next spectacular thing coming their way.

Doug notices that the Black - Backed Gull's head was pulled back and it was falling like everything was ruined forever. Doug felt like his life was ruined forever by the tattoo his father made him get, especially after it had been revealed to everyone in Gym Class after Coach Reed ripped his shirt.

Doug notices the birds forward movement from the light place into the dark place of the picture and realizes that it takes confidence to step into life's dark places. Doug realizes he is gaining confidence to step into the dark place in order to reveal the truth about his father.

Doug relates to the Arctic Tern's terrified eye since he moved to a new city and is dealing with a father and brother that don't treat him well.

Significance of the Fork Tailed Petrels

Doug sees how the birds are coming together for just one important moment even though the wind is blowing them in opposite directions. He realizes events that don't seem likely to happen have the potential to go in the opposite direction and turn out for the better.

Significance of the Snowy Heron

Doug shares how he realizes the Snowy Heron's head is held high and doesn't care that the hunter is approaching in the background because he sees possibility. Doug chooses to keep his head held high despite negative things in his life and tries to see the possibility of good things to come.
