Pelvic Girdle
Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine
Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine is on anterior wing of the ilium and is inferior to the anterior superior iliac spine. It is closer to the Acetabulum. (Ilium)
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine is the bony prominence on the anterior aspect of the lateral pelvis above the hip. Where the iliac crest terminates. (Ilium)
Coxal (Hip bone)
Each Coxal Bone is formed by the fusion of three bones. The ilium, ishcium and pubis. (Coxal)
Greater Sciatic Notch
Greater Sciatic Notch is the large indentation on the posterior aspect of the ilium. It is located between the posterior inferior iliac spine and the ischial spine. (Ilium)
lliac Crest
Iliac Crest is the superior margin of the iliac bone. When you put your hands on your hips you are resting them on the iliac crest. (Ilium)
Ischial Spine
Ischial Spine is the sharp posterior projection, superior to ischial tuberosity. It is the pointy part on upper ischium. (Ischuim)
Ischial Tuberosity
Ischial Tuberosity is the most prominent feature of the Ischium and is the part you sit on. And it is a large protuberance on the inferior part of the posterior margin of the body of the ischium. (Ischuim)
Lesser Sciatic Notch
Lesser Sciatic Notch, notch below ischial spine, above ischium. This is where your "finger falls into" when running down the posterior side of the Coxal bone. (Ischuim)
Obturator foramen
Obturator foramen is the hole created by the ischium and pubis bones of the pelvic cavity. The large opening is located below the acetabulum (Pubis)
Pubic Arch
Pubic Arch, angle formed by pubic bones as the approach symphysis, wider in females and more V shaped- in males (Pubis)
Pubic Symphysis
Pubic Symphysis at the cartilaginous joint at the front of the pelvis where the two pubic bones meet and fuse together. (Pubis)
Acetabulum
The Acetabulum "wine cup" is the hip socket. It is the cup-shaped socket in the hipbone into which the head of the femur fits to form a ball-and-socket joint. It is fomred by the fused ilium, ischium and pubis. (Pubis)
Ala
The Ala is the wing like portion of the ilium. Lateral side (Ilium)
Auricular Surface
The Auricular Surface connects posteriorly with the sacrum creating the Sacroiliac Joint. " ear-shaped" (Ilium)
True and False Pelvis
The False pelvis is medial to the flaring ala. The true (bony) pelvis is inferior to the bony ring formed by the coxals, the sacrum and the coccyx.
Ilium
The Ilium is the large superior region of the coxal bone. It is the flaring bone.
Ischuim
The Ischuim is the L-shaped posterir portion of the coxal bone
Pelvic Girdle
The Pelvic Girdle attaches the lower limbs to the axial skeleton. The Pelvic Girdle is formed by a pair of hip bones "Coxal bone". Each hip bone unties with its partner anteriorly and with the sacrum posteriorly.
Pubis
The Pubis is the V-shaped bone that forms the most anterior portion of hip or coxal bone . (Pubis)
Pelvic Structure - Sex of Skeleton
The sex of a skeleton can be determined by the shape of the pelvis structure. The pelvis of a female is lighter, shallower and rounder with a wider pelvic arch and a bigger true pelvis opening.
