How are science and art similar?

Science describes human possibilities. Arts describe human life.

Independent variable

"I" for independent. What "I" changed in an experiment.

Define communicate results

Be prepared to present the project. Expect questions.

Define formulate a hypothesis

Predict a possible answer to the question. Make an educated guess.

If scientific theories change, is this a strength or weakness of science?

Changing theories indicate our ability to understand more deeply. It is a strength because we create new and better technology that allow us to discover new things.

Define experiment

Develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list. Outcome must be measurable.

Define Scientific Method

Extremely effective in gaining, organizing, and applying new knowledge.

Define conclusion

Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for the future

Define problem step

Make a question that can be solved through experimentation

Define Observation/Research

Make observations and research your topic of interest

How do science and religion differ?

Science is proven through experiments. Religion is based on beliefs.

Fact

A close agreement by observers of a series of observations of the same phenomena.

Essential question: What would it be like to live in outer space?

Oxygen/breathing Gravity/floating Food/resources

What is the difference between science and technology?

Science is a method of answering theoretical questions. Technology is a method of solving practical questions.

Essential question: Scientific method

The scientific method is a way of gaining, organizing, and applying new knowledge. Through the scientific method, researchers define a problem, gather information, make a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, analyze the data, and form a conclusion. Through this process, scientists can test and retest hypotheses to deepen their understanding of how and why phenomena occur. Even when a hypothesis is disproven, the scientific method leads to greater understanding and the opportunity to explore a subject from another angle.

law or principle

When a hypothesis is tested over and over with the same results

Why is math important to science?

When findings are expressed in math, they are easier to verify or disprove by experiment.

Is a scientific fact proven and unchanging?

Scientific facts can be changing as new technologies, discoveries, and information become available.

Essential Question: State the difference between scientific theory and a hypothesis

Scientific theory is based on the conclusion of experimentation. A scientific theory is reached when many experiments come to the same conclusion. A hypothesis is an educated guess about what an experiment will prove. After the experiment, a hypothesis could be proven wrong. A scientific theory stands based on a long history of experiments in which the hypothesis was correct.

Why should citizens have a responsibility to have some basic understanding of nature's rules?

So that they will understand how things work and learn to be curious.

7 steps to the Scientific Method

1. Problem/Question 2. Observation/Research 3. Hypothesis 4. Experiment 5. Collect and Analyze 6. Conclusion 7. Communicate Results

What does it mean that if a hypothesis is scientific, then it must be able to be proven or proven wrong?

A hypothesis is an educated guess that is measurable through an experiment. The experiment can prove or disprove what was guessed.

Theory

A synthesis of a large body of information that encompasses well-tested and verified hypotheses. An explanation based on the conclusion of much experimentation.

Define collect and analyze

Modify the procedure. Confirm results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and pictures.

Why is physics the most basic science?

Science of matter, energy, and interactions

Dependent variable

The results that depend on the independent variable. Depends on what I changed.
