Psych Aspects Ch. 6 Weiner's Model
Two explanations for fundamental attribution error
-Attentional focus -when viewing another person -attention on the actor (not the situation) -Amount of effort -easier to form internal attributions -external attributions require more info
Maladaptive successful experiences
-External (internal?)---"today I felt confident; worked really hard but never be able to do that again" -Unstable "I was successful because of luck"
Self-serving bias
-Externalization of failures and internalization of successes -Why? -need to maintain positive image -maximize chances of looking competent
Adaptive successful experiences
-Internal -Stable (unstable?)---worked hard
Maladaptive failure experiences
-Internal----"I'm worthless" -Stable----can't get out of it
Consequences- Maladaptive attributions failure
-Learned helplessness -belief- no control over future outcomes -Motivation decreases
Weiner's Model of Attribution 3 dimensions:
-Locus of causality -Stability -Controllability (personal, others)
Early Model (Attribution)
-Locus of causality (internal, external) -Stability (stable, unstable)
Fundamental attribution error
-Overemphasizing internal causes AND -Underemphasizing external causes (attributions about others)
Adaptive failure experiences
-Unstable -External?----mom got mad (Internal?)--later you're ready to see what you can change
Weiner's Attribution Model Diagram
(1)-Performance outcome (2)-Outcome dependent emotion (2)-Causal attribution (3)-Locus of causality (4)-Emotion (5)-Performance (3)-Stability (4)-Emotion (4)-Expectations (5)-Performance (3)-Controllability (4)-Emotion (5)-Performance
Locus of Causality (Unstable External)
(bad luck) -Luck -Task difficulty -Team work -Officials
Locus of Causality (Internal Stable)
(courage) Stable ability
Locus of Causality (Unstable Internal)
(motivation, prep, hard-work, perseverance) -Effort -Psych factors -Unstable ability
Locus of Causality (Stable External)
(unhealthy environment) -Coaching -Ability of teammates
