Subliminal perception is influenced by priming. What is priming?
involves activating (unconsciously) associations in our mind, thus setting us up to perceive, remember or respond to objects or events in certain ways.
In what ways are we influenced by subliminal stimuli in our daily lives?
subliminal stimuli: Have you ever been watching a horror movie and then noticed you have to shift sitting position due to an uncomfortable feeling of tension in your muscles or a feeling of your heart beating faster than usual? or Perfume & personal care product counters located near the entrance of the store to present pleasant image & smells upon entering so you are attracted to enter store & spend more time shopping & more money or Bakery & deli smells distributed throughout the store air conditioning system to trigger hunger symptoms. Studies have shown that shoppers purchase more food items and spend more money grocery shopping when they are hungry compared to when they are not.
What is a subliminal message?
those visual and text images that are not at first perceived consciously, but appeal to and influence the unconscious desires, thoughts of the target audience and in turn exert influence on the unconscious motivations, thoughts, desires and in turn, results in encouraging certain conscious thoughts and behaviors of those individuals (PRIMING). They are thought to "prime" our unconscious mind to be more predisposed to exhibit some type of conscious behavior
What sensory process influences a supralimininal sensation to become a subliminal sensation?
Supraliminal recognition of music soon turns into subliminal recognition of music because the phenomenon of Sensory Adaptation occurs. If one hears music in the background long enough, sensory adaptation occurs and the sensory organs shut down due to the overstimulation and your conscious awareness of the music becomes subliminal or subconscious because you don't consciously notice it anymore, but it is still unconsciously being processed.
