Reconstruction
A plan to bring the Confederate states back into the Union.

Most of the new voters in the South registered with this political party.
Carpetbaggers
Northerners who moved to the south after the Civil War. They were supportive of the rights of newly freed slaves.
Compromise of 1877
Under this agreement the Southern states had the right to control their own affairs. The Democrats had to accept Rutherford B. Hayes as president, which settled the dispute over the presidential election between Hayes and Tilden. This agreement allowed Democrats to gain control of the South. This agreement also required that Carpetbaggers be removed from the South.

Andrew Johnson
After the assassination of Lincoln, this Democrat was sworn in as president. This president was responsible for reconstructing the country. He had to create a reconstruction plan after Lincoln died, because Lincoln had not completed the plan before his death. This president did not have political experience prior to becoming president.

Before and immediately after the Civil War, most of these people believed that everyone had his place in society.

President Johnson
Congressman trying to impeach this president, claimed that he unlawfully fired certain federal officials.
Samuel Tilden
He lost the presidential election after receiving the most of the popular votes. 3 states submitted 2 sets of election results, with different winners lists. They held a special election commission to decide the winner.
Nathan B. Forrest
He still supported the old ways of the South after losing the Civil War. He was the founder of the Klu Klux Klan.
Edwin M. Stanton
He was a Radical Republican and the Secretary of War until 1868, when President Johnson fired him. Congress wanted to impeach President Johnson for firing him because they said he didn't have the right to fire him. The House of Representatives passed the bill to impeach the President, but the bill failed in the Senate by only one vote.
Rutherford B. Hayes
He was became president after the presidential election resulted in Tilden receiving the most popular votes. But a special election commission was held to recognize him as president. He had the support of Radical Republicans.

It was difficult to be president of the United States after the Civil War because The President frequently had to do this to keep the Union together.
Black Codes
Laws that limited the rights of African Americans. One of which was a rule that African Americans could not meet in unsupervised groups. These laws also denied African Americans the right to bear arms and limited their rights to be on a jury.
Ulysses S. Grant
President Johnson and this president were the main leaders involved in reuniting the United States after the Civil War.

The Klu Klux Klan
The Compromise of 1877 did not help former slaves gain the support of local law enforcement because many Southern local law enforcement officers were members of this group. The members of this group were also Democrats.

This group supported the Fifteenth Amendment because many Northern states still barred African Americans from voting.

Klu Klux Clan
This group was originally organized to stop African Americans from voting. The group was founded in the 1870's and still exists today. The group was formed as a reaction to President Johnson beginning the Reconstruction plan.
