Types of Intersections?

- Where a side street meets a main road - Where alleys meet or cross another road - Freeway entrances - Driveway and shopping center entrances

You can also get a flat tire or blowout. To avoid that, you should check the air pressure frequently when the tires are cool. But it happens, and if so?

-Don't slam on the brakes. -Take your foot off the gas and ever so gently apply the brakes. -Drive straight forward until you reach a stop.

When you skid what should you do?

-Don't slam on the brakes. Take your foot off the gas pedal. -Turn your steering wheel gently in the direction you want to go. So if your back wheels are skidding to the right when you are trying to go straight, turn your steering wheel straight. After you recover, gently straighten out. -Remember that a skid can be avoided by slowing down in weather conditions where the road is slippery or wet. Make sure your tires are in good condition.

What are two of your responsibilities as a driver?

As a driver, you must observe and manage the lanes around you.

Where are vehicle's blind spots common?

Blind spots are commonly found on the side and rear of vehicles

Blind spot compensation what to do?

Check your blind spots frequently with quick glances over your shoulders to the left and the right. ALWAYS DO THIS BEFORE SWITCHING LANES. Not everyone follows Ace's advice, so don't "linger" in the blind spots of other vehicles. Be aware of large vehicles, especially semi-trailer trucks. Good defensive drivers prevent accidents before they happen.

To compensate for blind spots, quickly glance left and right over your shoulder and linger in the blind spots of other vehicles. True or False?

False: You should not linger in the blind spots of other vehicles.

If the road becomes wet or crowded, you should ____.

If the road is wet or crowded, you should slow down to increase your following distance.

If you drive off the pavement, you should __________.

If you drive off the pavement, you should grab your wheel tightly and take your foot off the gas pedal.

What should you do if your battery terminals are loose?

If your battery terminals are loose, you should tighten them with a wrench.

What does it most likely mean if your brake fluid level is usually low?

If your brake fluid level is usually low, you may have a leak.

What must you do if your car starts to skid?

If your car starts to skid, ease pressure off the gas pedal and turn your steering wheel in the direction you want to go.

6 zones surround your vehicle. What are they?

Left rear Left Front Rear Front Right Rear Right Front

Most positive battery terminals are ______.

Most positive terminals are red.

On the dead vehicle, where should you place the black jumper cable?

On the dead vehicle (the one needing to get jumped), place the black jumper cable on an unpainted metal surface in the engine.

The smith driving system?

One: Keep your eyes moving. Check your side and rearview mirrors every 5-8 seconds. Two: Aim high. Look about one block ahead of you so you have time to react to trouble spots coming up. Three: Leave yourself a way out. Always know if there are cars behind you or on your side in case you need to quickly leave your lane. Four: Get the big picture. Instead of concentrating too hard on one thing, try to view every driving situation as a whole. Consider the road, the environment, and all the people and vehicles in it. Five: Make sure others see you. Remember to use your lights and horn when appropriate and avoid others' blind spots.

How to be a defensive driver?

Stay alert. Check your side and rear-view mirrors every five to eight seconds. Look for trouble spots developing all around. Have a plan of action. Always know if there are cars behind you or on your sides in case you need to quickly leave your lane. Remember that the law requires drivers to protect each other from their own mistakes. Always be alert to keep yourself and other drivers safe.

Stella is driving down a steep hill. She should keep her car __________ to help _________.

Stella is driving down a steep hill. She should keep her car in a lower gear to help slow her vehicle.

The area around your car that you cannot see is called ____.

The area around your car that you cannot see is called the vehicle's hidden operating space

When using jumper cables, how should the "booster" vehicle be parked in relation to the "dead" vehicle?

The booster vehicle and dead vehicle should be parked facing each other.

Where is the best place to change your flat tire?

The ideal place to change your tire is on a flat surface.

Increase your following distance when?

The road is wet. Wet roads have a very negative effect on the ability of drivers to stop. Compensate for this factor by increasing your following distance during bad weather. The road is crowded. In heavy traffic situations, the risk of other drivers making unsafe decisions and endangering your vehicle's space increases. Compensate for this factor by increasing your following distance. Slow down and increase your following distance when your vision is limited as well. If it's dark or bad weather, you don't want to overdrive your range of vision. You should be able to stop within the distance you can see in front of your car.

A good rule to remember is to always stay at least three seconds behind a vehicle. True or False?

True

After letting the vehicle idle for a couple minutes, try to start the hopefully revived vehicle's engine. If this works, hooray!! If the car doesn't start, try revving the donor car's engine slightly to 3,000 rpm for a minute. This will slightly increase the charge it's sending to the dead vehicle. True or False?

True

After making sure the jumper cables are securely in place and not near any moving engine parts, start the engine of the donor car. You'll probably need to let it idle for a couple minutes. If your vehicle's battery is dead, it will need several minutes to charge. The dead vehicle should remain off. Don't waste any of the charge it's receiving on lights and radios. True or False?

True

Analysts say drivers make 50 to 60 decisions every mile they are on the road. True or False?

True

Any time you approach an intersection, look both ways. Look left first, since vehicles coming from your left will be closer to you. Next, look to the right for vehicles and pedestrians coming from that direction. True or False?

True

Any time you drive with your vehicle in reverse, you're in heightened danger. When you need to back up: True or False? -Before you get in your vehicle, look for animals, children, and objects behind it. -Look over your shoulder while you're backing up. Don't just use the mirror alone. -Back up slowly to avoid crashes. There's no reason to floor it in reverse.

True

Be on high alert whenever there are a lot of pedestrians along the side of the road. Odds are good that at least one of them will try to cross or enter the roadway. True or False?

True

Blind Spot Reminder Your blind spots are at the sides and rear of your vehicle. The larger a vehicle is, the larger its blind spots. Avoid driving in another vehicle's blind spots. True or False?

True

Car's blind spots vary in size depending on the length, height, and design of your vehicle. True or False?

True

Connecting jumper cable: True or False? Identify the positive terminal on the dead car's battery. The positive terminal will most often be red and marked by the positive sign (+). After you have identified the positive terminal on the dead car's battery, attach the red jumper cable to the positive terminal. Make sure the clamp is well secured and won't move if the engine vibrates. Again, start with the dead battery first.

True

Crosswalks can be marked or unmarked (common in residential areas), and almost all intersections have them. Some crosswalks are located in the middle of blocks. True or False?

True

DON'T assume any of these things about other drivers: True or False - They'll only turn if they have their turn signal on - They will see a vehicle starting to cross the road in front of them - They will see and obey all signs and traffic signals

True

Disconnect the jumper cables in this order: True or false Negative ground (black) on the previously dead battery. Negative terminal (black) on the donor battery. Positive terminal (red) on the donor battery. Positive terminal (red) on the previously dead battery. AKA: -(black) DEAD, -(black) DONOR, + (red) DONOR, +(red) DEAD

True

Don't Assume. True or False

True

Don't cross an intersection if you can't clearly see cross traffic first. True or False?

True

If driving down a steep hill keep your car at a lower gear. True or False?

True

If you drive off the pavement, don't slam on your brakes. Grab your wheel tightly and take your foot off the gas pedal. Carefully apply your brakes. After you've slowed down and checked for traffic, you can turn back onto the road. True or False?

True

If you need to slow down suddenly, quickly check your rearview mirror. True or False?

True

If you're driving at 30 mph, a 12- to 15-second visual lead would be 528 to 660 feet. That's about the length of one block. True or False?

True

If your brakes fail, stay calm. Remember that you have your parking brake and shift to a lower gear. In these situations, use your parking brake cautiously because you don't want to cause your car to skid. True or False?

True

If your tire is flat: True or False? Step 1- If you're driving, you need to pull over to a safe, flat location clear of traffic and away from potential danger. Do not try to change your tired on a hill. Step 2- Next, put your vehicle into the Park position and apply the parking brake. If your vehicle has a standard transmission (manual), put your vehicle in First or Reverse. Make sure to apply the parking brake to ensure your vehicle will not move while you are underneath it. Step 3- Your vehicle should come with an emergency road kit that includes at least the following tools: jumper cables, spare tire, jack, flashlight, and a wrench. Check your trunk for this kit. You'll need to buy these items at an auto hardware store if you do not have them. Step 4- Remember, it's super important to place the jack on a flat surface. You don't want your vehicle rolling down the hill while you are under it. Many vehicles have molded plastic along the bottom of the car, and if you place your jack in the incorrect location, the plastic may crack when you start lifting the jack. I recommend reading your owner's manual if you're unsure of the proper place to put your jack. As a rule of thumb, most modern cars have a small notch or mark where the jack should be positioned. You can find this mark just behind the front wheel well or just in front of the rear wheel well. For the older cars and most trucks in your life, you'll probably place the jack just behind the front wheel well Step 5- Your vehicle's emergency road kit should include a multi-purpose wrench, and you can use that wrench to elevate your jack. Elevate your vehicle just a little, but not all the way. Leave the tire still touching the ground, but release some of the weight of the car off of the tire. Step 6- Before we can take the flat tire off, we need to loosen up the nuts holding it in place. Using the wrench you used for the jack, place the socket over 1 of the 4 nuts. A correctly-sized wrench will slip easily over the nuts, but will not rattle. The bolts will be pretty tight, and you may need to use your body weight to loosen them. Just make sure you are turning the bolts the correct way: counter-clockwise. Remember, Lefty-Loosey, Righty-Tighty. Don't completely remove the bolts, just turn them until they're loose. You'll take the bolts off later. Step 7- Use your wrench (again) to lift the jack even more. Now, your flat tire should be completely off the ground and not touching the road surface. Step 8- With the tire completely off the ground, turn the bolts counter clockwise until they are completely off of the tire. Repeat until all bolts are taken off. Because they are already loose, you should be able to take the bolts off with your hand. No wrench necessary. Step 9- Remove the tire Step 10- Put the spare tire on the wheel Step 11- Place the nuts over the wheel's bolts and begin to tighten them using your hands. Remember, you turn the bolts clockwise (to the right) to tighten them. Tighten all the bolts as much as possible using your hands. We will finish tightening them later. Step 12- Lower the jack and bring the vehicle down to the ground. Using your wrench, tighten the nuts as much as possible. Step 13- Lower the vehicle all the way to the ground and remove the jack. Finish tightening the nuts. Step 14- Oh, and you'll need a new tire as well, so ask your mechanic or a tire shop about that. In general, most spare tires should not be driven more than 50 miles or faster than 50 mph. You should get a new tire ASAP.

Look at the diagram. True or False?

True

Look behind you when you can. True or False?

True

Look out for the following: True or False? - Pedestrians who may enter the road by the time you reach them - Signs warning you of potential hazards - Signs giving you directions

True

Look to the Sides. True or False?

True

Looking behind you is especially important while performing any of the following: True or False - Entering a freeway from an on-ramp - Returning to the road from the curb or shoulder - Slowing down suddenly - Backing up - Driving down a long or steep downgrade (In this case, watch out for large vehicles, which gain a lot of speed when they go downhill.)

True

Make sure to look ahead. True or False?

True

Manage your space by searching, evaluating, and executing actions that keep you and others safe. Always have an escape route, be aware of others in your vehicle's space, and anticipate potential problems. True or False?

True

Never let the jumper cable clamps connect to each other. After the next step, we will have live charges going through the jumper cables, so it's important to make sure the metal clamps don't connect. True or False?

True

Perception is key. Pay attention to others on the road. Always be aware of the space surrounding your vehicle. True or False?

True

Place the remaining black jumper cable on an unpainted metal surface in the engine of the dead car. It could be a bolt or a frame. DO NOT place the black jumper cable on the negative terminal of the dead vehicle's battery. Though many drivers do this, placing the remaining cable on the battery does not ground the battery and may produce a spark, which could ignite the battery. True or False?

True

Please make sure your jumper cable is not dangling in any engine's fans or belts. When you start your vehicle, you don't want the jumper cable to get caught in one of these. True or False?

True

SPIDE STANDS FOR: True or False - Search the traffic environment - Identify other vehicles, pedestrians, and road conditions - Predict hazards in your intended travel path - Decide to change your speed or position - Execute the necessary maneuvers

True

TSD = PD + RD + BD formula for stopping distance. True or False? TSD- Total stopping distance PD- Perception distance RD- Reaction distance BD- Braking distance

True

The fifth and final step to SPIDE is execution. Your mind is already made up at this point; you just need to do it. True or False?

True

The first step to SIPDE is Search. Search the road for new information, road conditions, and other roadway users. True or False?

True

The fourth step to SPIDE is decide. As a driver, you must quickly and cautiously choose which action to take when a potential hazard turns into an actual hazard. True or False?

True

The recommended three-second following distance rule works best in ideal driving conditions. True or False?

True

The rest of the space around the car (the stuff you can see) is your visible operating space. True or False?

True

The second step to SPIDE is Identify. Identify situations that involve risk. True or False?

True

The third step to SPIDE is prediction. You can make an educated guess about how driving conditions will change, or what a fellow roadway user will do next. True or False?

True

Tire maintenance is the easiest way for you to prevent blowouts and maintain good traction. When examining your vehicle's tires, check their tread and inflation. True or False?

True

Tread depth can be measured using a penny. Put a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head facing towards you. The head should be down in the tread. If you can see his head while looking from the side, then your tread is too worn and your tires should be replaced. true or False?

True

Under-inflation is bad for the sides of a tire and your ability to maintain traction. Over-inflated tires are dangerously prone to blowouts and will wear quickly. Your tire pressure should be somewhere in that happy medium. True or False?

True

Usually, there will are was be a blind spot, no matter how good your mirror positioning is. True or False?

True

While you're looking at the donor vehicle's battery, identify the negative terminal. It should be black and will be marked by a negative symbol (-). Attach your black jumper cable to the donor vehicle's negative terminal. Make sure the clamp is well secured and won't move if the engine vibrates. True or False?

True

You can bet that conditions will change when: True or False? - Pedestrians or bicyclists are near the road - You're coming up on a narrow bridge - There is a road obstruction - There is construction, ice, water, or a pothole- You approach slow-moving vehicles

True

You need to be able to execute each step of SIPDE in order to drive safely. You will be relying on your perception, judgment, and motor functions. True or False?

True

in between the rearview mirror and side mirrors, there are areas not shown. These are your blind spots. True or False?

True

you will need to know the procedures to manage breakdowns: True or False? -If you can't get the car off the paved road, get everyone out of it, and use portable warning devices (like reflective triangles) to warn the other drivers that your car is stopped there. -When possible, move the car off the pavement to the side of the road. If you have a flat tire or blowout, your car can be slowly driven off the road or onto the shoulder. -Turn on your emergency lights. If you don't have those, turn on your taillights. If you are stuck at night, you should leave the lights on in your car as well. -Tie a white cloth to your radio antenna or some other place where it can easily be seen. If you do not have one, open your hood.

True

Should you adjust your mirrors?

Yes

You are on a busy road. What is the first thing you must do to better manage your space?

You must search the roads for new information on road conditions and other drivers.

What is the maximum distance you should drive on a spare tire?

You should not drive on a spare tire more than 50 miles.

Following distance what is it?

Your following distance is the amount of space you leave between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. It's measured in the number of seconds that go by between the time the first car passes a given point and when the following car passes that same point.

Your vehicle's ____ and ____ have the greatest impact on traction.

Your vehicle's weight and tires have an impact on traction.

Keep a visual lead. What is it. And how much should I keep it.

Your visual lead is how far ahead you look while driving, measured in how many seconds it would take you to drive to the farthest point of your view. - City driving: 12 to 15 seconds - High-speed driving: 20 to 30 seconds

The traditional mirror adjustment method?

drivers have set their side mirrors so they can see the back end of their vehicles. This gives drivers both a view of the back corner of their vehicle and part of the accompanying lane.

Braking distance is?

how far the car travels after the brakes have been applied.

Perception distance measures?

how long you travel while perceiving a hazard.

Where is usually the hidden operating space?

on the front, rear, corners, and sides of your vehicle

BGE (Blind spot Glare Elimination) method for adjusting your mirrors, what is it?

some drivers adjust their side mirrors to the outside as far as possible, not showing any part of their vehicle's side. This maximizes their view of the side lanes, minimizing their blind spots as much as possible.

Reaction distance is?

the distance your vehicle travels during the time it takes you to move your foot from the accelerator to the brake. on average, this takes a driver three-quarters of a second.

Hidden Operating Space what is it?

there's going to be an area around your car that you cannot see because your vehicle blocks it from view.

What are blind spots.

which are areas where you can't see in your mirrors if another car is next to you or nearby
