Metallic Bond

A bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them.

Ionic Compound Formation

An ionic compound forms because the opposite charges of the ions cause the ions stick together. (ions held together)

What are 4 physical properties of an ionic compound?

Brittle highly soluble high melting point high boiling point

Describe Chemical Bonding.

Chemical bonding is the bonding of atoms to make new substances.

Diatomic Elements

Elements that are found in nature as diatomic molecules.

Explain how to use valence electrons to predict if an atom will form bonds.

Group 8 has 8 valence electrons so..that´s how I know. Group 2 has 2 valence electrons so Group 2 will most likely form bonds.

:

Ionic Bonds form when electrons are transferred from one atoms to another atom.

:

Ionic bonding usually occurs between atoms of metals and atoms of nonmetals.

3 properties of Metals are....

Malleability, conductivity, ductility.

Diatomic Molecules

Molecules made up of two atoms.

:

The number of Valence Electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom determines if an atom will form bonds.

How are Valence electrons different from other electrons in an atom?

They are different because because they are on the last level of the atoms.

:

When metal atoms bond with other atoms, the metal atoms tend to lose these valence electrons and from positive ions.

Covalent Bonds

a bond that forms when atoms SHARE one or more pairs of electrons. EX: 2 nonmetals do not transfer electrons instead they share electrons.

Crystal Lattice

the regular pattern in which a crystal is arranged.

:

when an atom loses electrons, energy is needed to overcome the attraction of the electrons to the protons in the nucleus.

what happens to the electrons in covalent bonding?

Electrons are shared.

Ionic Bonds

Forms when valence electrons are transferred from one atom to another atom. In ionic bonds one atom has lost electrons and another atom has gained electrons.

:

In covalent bonding, two atoms share electrons, a covalent bond forms when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.

Ions

a charged particle that forms when an atom or group of atoms gains or loses one or more electrons.

Molecule

a molecule is usually made of 2 or more atoms joined in a definite ratio. A group pf atoms that are held together by chemical forces; a molecule is the smallest unit of matter that can exist by itself and retain all of a substance's chemical properties.

Valence Electron

an electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom and that determines the atoms chemical properties.

Chemical Bond

an interaction that holds atoms or ions together.

Metallic bonding

in metallic bonding, the valence electrons move throughout the metal. A metallic bond is formed by the attraction between positive metal ions and electrons in the metal.

:

level 18 is nonreactive because it has 8 valence electrons.

Chemical Bonding

the combining of atoms to form molecules or ionic compounds. (new substances)
