Types of movements (that occurs at synovial joints)

Plantarflexion

Extending the foot at the ankle (toes downwards) Joint: Ankle

Dorsiflexion

Flexing the foot at the ankle in the direction of the dorsum (toes upwards) Joints: Ankle

Eversion

Lateral movement of the sole of the foot Joint: Ankle

Inversion

Medial movement of the sole of the foot Joint: Ankle

Abduction

Movement of a bone away from the midline Joints: Shoulder & Hip

Circumduction

Movement of the distal end of a part of the body in a circle Joint: Shoulder and hip

Supination

Rotating the forearm so the palm faces anteriorly or superiorly Joint: Wrist

Pronation

Rotating the forearm so the palm faces posteriorly or inferiorly Joint: Wrist

Rotation

Turning of a bone around its own longitudinal axis Joints: Head, trunk, shoulder and hip

Hyperextension

A continuation of extension beyond the anatomical position Joint: Neck, shoulder, hip

Flexion

A decrease in the angle between articulating bones Joints: Elbow, knee, shoulder, hip, neck, wrist, ankle phalanges

Extension

An increase in the angle between articulating bones Joints: Elbow, knee, shoulder, hip, neck, wrist, ankle phalanges

Adduction

movement of a bone toward the midline Joints: Shoulder & hip
