*Birds eye view of the Bible:

Authored over 1500 years; by 40 different human authors.

*Matthew is a bridge:

Between testaments; "Son of David" (the Messiah); The Law is fulfilled in Christ; (Theological bridge Jesus Christ fulfills the OT.)

*Paradoxes:

Christ is the King (Matt.); who serves (Mark); Christ is the man (Luke) who is God (John).

*Pentateuch (Law)

Contents: Laws; Sacrifice; Issue was Holiness; Sin was the problem. Needed perfect priest (to offer a perfect sacrifice to remove sin.)

Prophetic Books

Contents: Preaching; Prediction; Loyalty was the issue; sin/spiritual adultery was the problem. Needed perfect prophet.

Wisdom Books

Contents: Wisdom; worship; the fear of the Lord was the issue; the problem was sin/idolatry/injustice. Needed perfect shepherd.

*John (most unique gospel):

Emphasis on God as Christ's Father, and the importance of believing. 7 I am statements: Bread of life; light of the world; door of the sheep; good shepherd; the resurrection and the life; the way, the truth and the life; the true vine. 7 sign miracles: water into wine; healing the nobleman's son; healing the lame man at Bethesda; feeding the 5,000; walking on water; healing the blind man; raising Lazarus. 7 witnesses: John the baptist; Nathaniel; Peter; Martha; Thomas; John; Jesus.

Epistles:

Explanation (content), interpretation of Christ. (function)

*Synagogue:

Focused on Torah and clung to their identity as God's chosen people; restored the temple but it was meager in comparison to Solomon's; Jew's would gather 10 men together to form a synagogue.

Judas, Pilate and the priests:

Handed Jesus to the people.

*Matthew: (a Jew to Jews):

He doesn't find it necessary to explain Jewish customs (130 quotes or alludes to OT, more than any other NT book).

Acts:

History (it's content), and the proclamation of Christ. (the function)

Jesus probably had short hair

If Jesus had longhair Paul probably would have made a statement about it.

*Israel's size:

Is 1/3 size of South Carolina. 3 million Jews lived in Palestine; total 8 million Jews in Jesus day; all major cities had Jews.

*Gethsemane:

It's recorded in all 4 gospels; Jesus did request fo the Father but He also had acceptance (not my will but Yours be done). (Christ was in complete control)

*Scribes:

Lawyers; copiers; in NT "lawyers" and "scribes" are synonymous.

*Sadducees:

Liberal aristocrats; in charge of temple; no substantial following by the general populace; denied life after death and the resurrection of the body; name means "the righteous ones" or "judges".

Luke

Main Purpose: To Present an accurate amount of Jesus' Life. Theme: Jesus as the perfect man.

Matthew

Main Purpose: To demonstrate that Jesus is the king of the Jews. Theme: Jesus as Messiah, King of the Jews.

John

Main Purpose: To evangelize (believe in Jesus Christ.) Theme: Jesus as God.

Acts

Main Purpose: To give an account of the growth of Christianity. Theme: The evangelization of the world.

Mark

Main Purpose: To present Jesus as the Suffering Sovereign. Theme: Jesus as the Servant of the Lord.

Hillel

Moderate, dominant school within Judaism.

*Essenes:

Monastics; group of ascetics; settled in monastic communities; strict lifestyle and hierarchy; before meals they took a purification bath and put on special clothing; most were celibate; simple in dress and lifestyle.

History Books

Obedience lead to blessing/victory; disobedience lead to judgement/defeat; issue was leadership; sin/iniquity was the problem. Needed perfect king.

*Where the Pharisees went wrong:

Oral law (tradition) was equally as inerrant and authoritative as the written law (the Torah).

Paul's letters are arranged from longest to shortest (not chronological.) Luke is 28%; Paul is 24%; John is 20%; Matthew is 13%; Everyone else is 15%.

*Herodians:

Prophecy (content), consummation of Christ. (function)

*Zealots:

Radicals; militant wing of Jewish nationalism; bitterly opposed any tax or tribute to pagan ruler as treason against God; patriotism and religion inseparable, engaged in terrorism against Rome.

*Pharisees:

Traditionalists; name comes from "separated"; only part to survive the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70; they were laymen, farmers, or small merchants (about 6,000 under Herod); had opinion on their side; educational system; believed only One is good; immortality of the soul.

*Mark (to the Romans):

Translated Aramaic letters; explains Jewish customs; uses Latin (Roman) expressions; (those you expect to believe don't, those you wouldn't expect to believe do); presents Jesus as being on-the-go; (servant theme) uses "immediately" and "and" frequently; almost no speeches of Christ recorded.

Pilate:

Tried to release Jesus 7x.

*Jew's Clothing/Appearance:

Tunic: basic garment; Mantle went over the tunic (The poor used the mantle for a blanket); Women covered their hair with a net or cloth; Men wore their hair short.

*Sanhedrin:

Was headed by the high priest of Israel; was often translated "council" in English versions; Sanhedrin came to include the Sadducees (or "chief priests") and the Pharisees; Acts 23:1-10 shows the Sanhedrin would sometimes divide along party lines.

Mark answers:

Why? (So that we would believe.)
