Sergei Eisenstein: Battleship Potemkin

-Editing's use of montage style used to reflect the pain authoritative figures (police) inflicted upon sailors. The Odessa steps sequence shows the people of Odessa until tropes appear and slaughter the crowd. -Eisenstein's individual shots are brutal, but the montage brings life to the chaos. -Juxtaposition of unrelated images creates fasted paced action, takes audience away from complacency.

Akira Kurosawa- 'Seven Samurai' (1954)

- Seven Samurai always showed the consequences of violence. - Mise-en-scene of the film proves Kurosawa wanted to portray the brutality of real violence/ wanted his audience to feel every death (even the antagonist's). - Penn heavily influenced by Kurosawa/ seen in Bonnie and Clyde's final sequence/ it depicts the reality of their crimes/makes the audience realize they have fallen into the trap of glamorized crime (some audiences feel sympathy for the pair).

Soviet Montage Editing

- Used for the political reason that is: to show society the discriminate treatment of the lower class. -It showcased the brutality and violence inflicted on vulnerable people by those in authority.
