America in the mid-late 60s

- Vietnam war: government's top priority/ lack of money for poverty movement - War divided nation/ damaged economy/caused young people to protest in streets/became the nation's longest and most debilitating war. - Police were using tear gas and becoming violent towards those protesting for democracy (Chigarco).

French New Wave Influence

- emerged in 1950s and 1960s. - form of European art cinema (movement). - New wave filmmakers were connected by their rejection to traditional film conventions/ their use of experimentation with editing, Mise-en-scene, and narrative. - Films engaged with the social and political upheavals of the era (Les Mepris 1967).

Sergei Eisenstein: Battleship Potemkin

-Editing's use of montage style used to reflect the pain authoritative figures (police) inflicted upon sailors. The Odessa steps sequence shows the people of Odessa until tropes appear and slaughter the crowd. -Eisenstein's individual shots are brutal, but the montage brings life to the chaos. -Juxtaposition of unrelated images creates fasted paced action, takes audience away from complacency.

New Hollywood's Editing Style in B&C

-Montage -Slow motion -Extreme close ups- emotional response -Eyeline match -Location filming -Contrapuntal music -Violent mise-en-scene -Point of view (Bonnie's gaze in the opening scene) -Genre hybridity -Editing for emotional response (dramatic) -Complexity of point of view (Bonnie)

Dede Allen's Influences

-Pioneered the use of jump-cuts, audio overlaps, mixing slow motion with regular speed, cutting before the end of a scene, and fracturing time by changing the sequence of scenes in 'New Hollywood' cinema. - Allen was heavily influenced by French new wave film ('Mickey one' in 1965). -Allen wanted Arthur Penn to 'take out more' (wanted each shot to seem 'mismatched'/ seems a complete contrast from the 'invisible editing' style used in Classical Hollywood era/ Allen wanted each shot to be questioned by the spectator).

Warner Brothers

-Warner Brothers: Founded by 4 Warner brothers: Albert, Sam, Harry and Jack. The brothers brought sound to film, established film musicals, founded the gangster genre and produced films that helped to change issues within society. -Major films include: 'My Fair Lady' (George Cukor, 1965) and 'Ocean's Eleven' (Lewis Milestone, 1960).

Akira Kurosawa- 'Seven Samurai' (1954)

- Seven Samurai always showed the consequences of violence. - Mise-en-scene of the film proves Kurosawa wanted to portray the brutality of real violence/ wanted his audience to feel every death (even the antagonist's). - Penn heavily influenced by Kurosawa/ seen in Bonnie and Clyde's final sequence/ it depicts the reality of their crimes/makes the audience realize they have fallen into the trap of glamorized crime (some audiences feel sympathy for the pair).

Soviet Montage Editing

- Used for the political reason that is: to show society the discriminate treatment of the lower class. -It showcased the brutality and violence inflicted on vulnerable people by those in authority.
