Checkpoint 1 - Chemistry 8.4 Sedimentary rocks
Why is limestone often white?
Because the grains are made up of calcium carbonate
How can you tell if rocks are sedimentary?
The rock has layers, it contains fossils, the rock is porous
How is sandstone formed?
Grains of sand are pressed together
How is sedimentary rock formed?
Layers of sediment collect on the sea and the weight of new sediment presses down on old sediment layers
What is sediment?
Little fragments of rocks
How is limestone formed?
Little fragments of shells are pressed together
What are sedimentary rocks made up of?
Little grains of sediment that are stuck together
Give two examples of sedimentary rock.
Sandstone and limestone
What happens when the remains of dead plants and animals fall into the sediment?
They become part of the rock and form fossils
What does it mean if a rock is porous?
Water can soak in through the the gaps between the grains of particles that are stuck together
