Of all the potential barriers to effective intercultural communication (anxiety, assumed similarity or difference, ethnocentrism, stereotyping, incompatible communication codes, or incompatible norms and values), which is the most difficult for most people (not just you) to overcome? Why? Be sure to explain it as well as why the others are not the most difficult.

Of all the potential barriers to effective intercultural communication I believe the most difficult for the majority of people to overcome is incompatible communication codes. This is the most difficult because it takes a long period of time to learn what others are saying. Even if you are speaking the same language, some words mean different things such as the word football in Britain means something different in America. Intercultural communication becomes even harder when you do not speak the same language at all. It takes motivation and dedication to understand. Anxiety can be overcome once you have observed and discovered it is not as bad as it may have originally seemed. Assumed similarity or difference and stereotyping can also be overcome easily once you have an open mind about the differences of the culture. Incompatible norms and values is easily overcome once you realize that people's values are different it becomes easy to adjust.

Explain the ways communication helps shape our self-concept.

Self-concept is the way we view ourselves through our different skills. Communication is an important part of how our self-concept is shaped. After doing anything others around us react or give us feedback. This can be positive or negative. When some gets a response, it alters how they see themselves. A good example of this is if someone asks you for advice. You tell them a good resolution to their problem. He or she then says you are good at coming up with solutions quickly. The comment reinforces a positive self-concept.
