Endothermic and Exothermic Questions
Endothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction that absorbs heat INTO the reactants making the product feel COOLER
Exothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction that RELEASES heat from the reactants, making the product feel WARMER
1. feel the temperature change during the experiment. 2. measure the temperature difference with a thermometer.
How can you determine if the if a reaction is endothermic or exothermic?
The group number tells you the number of valence electrons.
How can you look at the periodic table and tell how many valence electrons an element has?
You measured the temperature of reactants first and then measured the temperature of the products.
How did you track the flow of energy in the endothermic/exothermic reactions?
The element is stable and will not react with other elements.
How do you know if the valence electron shell is full?
Endothermic- the chlorophyll in the plants absorbs infrared (heat) from the sun.
Is photosynthesis endothermic or exothermic?
Conductivity
The ability for a substance to conduct heat or electricity
Endothermic- decrease in temperature
The temperature in Chemical Reaction A decreases by 30 degrees in 21 minutes. Is this an endothermic or exothermic reaction?
Exothermic- increase in temperature
The temperature in Chemical Reaction B increases by 15 degrees in 25 minutes. Is this an endothermic or exothermic reaction?
Exothermic- increase in temperature
The temperature in Chemical Reaction C increases by 32 degrees in 14 minutes. Is this an endothermic or exothermic reaction?
Endothermic- the temperature of the product decreased from the temperature of the reactants.
Was the citic acid and baking soda reaction endothermic or exothermic?
Exothermic- the temperature of the product increased over the temperature of the reactants.
Was the liver and hydrogen peroxide reaction endothermic or exothermic?
Exothermic because the temperature of the product increased (you could feel the container get warmer)
Was the yeast and hydrogen peroxide reaction endothermic or exothermic?
Groups
What are the columns on the Periodic Table called?
Periods
What are the rows on the Period Table called?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What does the atomic mass tell you?
The number of protons
What does the atomic number of an element tell you?
It needs to have the same number of protons and electrons.
What has to happen in an atom in order for it to be neutral?
Negative
What is the electrical charge of electrons?
Neutral (no charge)
What is the electrical charge of neutrons?
Positive
What is the electrical charge of protons?
