Second longer response: Focus on the theme of generational trauma: How does Tommy Orange convey the theme of generational trauma and how does that expand across generations? What happened to Native Americans in the past that affect the present in the novel? Mass genocide caused mistrust in the government?

In "There There" by Tommy Orange, the book talks about how the past is still hurting Native Americans in cities. The characters struggle with who they are, losing their culture, and feeling really sad about things that happened a long time ago. They don't trust the government much because of the history between Natives and the gov. Specific instances, such as Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield's memories, showcase individual consequences and the intergenerational transmission of trauma. Dene Oxendene's film project provides a transformative space for collective storytelling and empowerment, enabling the communal confrontation of historical trauma. The book mixes the past and today to show how the sad things from a long time ago still affect Native American communities in cities. The novel skillfully interweaves historical events with the contemporary narrative, providing a sensitive portrayal of the lasting effects of historical trauma on urban Native American communities.
