Micro lab quiz 4
What is UV used for in lab?
A physical agent to sterilize surgical instruments to inhibit growth of micro organisms
What is the difference between an antiseptic and an antibiotic?
An antiseptic is a anti microbial agent for use on living tissue. An antibiotic is a chemical produced to kill or inhibit another organism. Unlike antibiotics, however, antiseptics are also effective on other microorganisms, making it potentially beneficial in fighting other infections. Antibiotics do kill the bacteria, but are believed to be ineffective toward many other types of infection
Zone of inhibition
An area of no growth around a disc
Antiseptic
Anti microbial agent for use on living tissue
Disinfectant
Anti microbial agent for use on nonliving objects
What is the difference between an antibiotic and an antiseptic?
Antibiotics are chemicals produced by an organism, as opposed to antiseptics which are not made by other organisms, that can kill another organism. Because antibiotic are produced by living organisms they are called natural products.
Antibiotic
Chemical produced by an organism to limit the growth or kill another organism
Kirby Bauer method
Determines the effectiveness of antibiotics
Define disinfectant, antiseptic, microcidal, microstatic, zone of inhibition, antibiotic, mueller-Hinton agar, Kirby Bauer method and pyramidine dimers.
Disinfectants are anti microbial agents that either kill or inhibit microbial growth and are used on non living objects. Antiseptics are anti microbial agents used on living objects. Microcidal chemicals are chemicals that are designed to kill microbes. Microstatic chemicals prevent microbial growth. Zone of inhibition is an area of no growth around an antibiotic agent. Antibiotics are chemicals produced by an organism, as opposed to antiseptics which can be synthetic, that can kill another organism. Because antibiotic are produced by living organisms they are called natural products. Mueller Hinton agar is an agar that can easily diffuse antibiotics to demonstrate resistance and inhibition in Kirby Bauer tests. Kirby Bauer tests are used to determine effectiveness of antibiotics. Pyramidine dimers are formations caused by UV exposure that distort DNA thereby inhibiting DNA replication and interfering with cell division. That's how uv exposure leads to melanoma.
What's the difference between Disinfectants and antiseptics
Disinfectants are too harsh for use on living tissue. Antiseptics may be used on living tissue.
Describe the zone of inhibition
If an antibiotic stops the bacteria from growing or kills the bacteria, there will be an area around the wafer where the bacteria have not grown enough to be visible. This is called a zone of inhibition. The size of this zone depends on how effective the antibiotic is at stopping the growth of the bacterium.
How does UV inhibit growth?
It causes the formation of pyramidine dimers in DNA
Chemicals that are designed to kill microbes are called?
Microcidal
What's the difference between microstatic and microcidal?
Microcidal chemicals are designed to kill microbes. And microstatic chemicals prevent their growth.
Chemicals that prevent microbial growth are called
Microstatic
What agar is used in Kirby Bauer method
Mueller Hinton agar
What kind of agar is used in Kirby Bauer method?
Mueller Hinton agar
Disinfectant
Prevents infection. Used on nonliving surfaces like table
Antiseptic
Prevents sepsis and used on living tissue.
What are two purines?
Pure Agriculture. Purines = adenine and guanine
What are two classes of nucleotides
Purines and pyramidines
What are pyramidine dimers?
Pyramidine dimers are double bonds that form between adjacent pyramidines in a strand of DNA. They distort DNA structure thereby inhibiting DNA replication and interfering with cell division.
Describe the S zone.
S = Sensitive. The zone of inhinbition is within a diameter greater than the outer circle.
Describe the I zone.
The I zone = intermediate. The zone of inhibition with a diameter greater than R but less than the outer circle.
Describe the R zone.
The R zone = Resistant. This is the zone of inhibition with a diameter equal to or less than inner circle
What are the two pyramidines?
The colossal pyramids. Thymine, cytosine = pyramidines
Explain the difference between an antiseptic and a disinfectant.
antiseptics are used on living tissue such as skin and disinfectants are used on inanimate surfaces/objects
What is the difference between bacteriostatic and bactericidal?
bacteriostatic means limiting the growth of bacteria, while bactericidal means "killing" bacteria
