A group of women organized by Laura Wolcott, and several others, then used the pieces of lead and made cartridges. ( A cartridge is in a rifle that holds the bullet and gunpowder ) Which made loading the bullets and gunpowder, faster and easier so the soldiers had more time to fight and protect themselves, and protect the patriots.

James Armistead

African American Patriot who spied for the Americans during the American Revolution. After the war he gained freedom

American poet (born in Africa) who was the first recognized Black writer in America (1753-1784). She praised George Washington and he was so impressed that he requested to meet her.

American seamstress said to have made the first American flag at the request of George Washington (1752-1836) from Philadelphia.

Fort Vincennes

Fort controlled by the British. Captured in a surprise attack by Clark and his 170 man army in February 1779. This victory strengthened the American control of the Ohio River valley. Won because Clark tricked them into thinking that they were outnumbered by Americans.

Martha Washington

George Washington's wife who joined him on the battlefield and helped American troops by making clothes and caring for the sick.

Bernardo de Galvez

Governor of New Spain in North American who helped during the Revolution by buying Spanish weapons and supplies for the colonial army AND allowing Patriots to use port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River. He attacked Pensacola by trapping 2,500 English soldiers.
