divisor
In division, the number that divides another number. For example, in 35÷5 = 7, the divisor is 5.
dividend
In division, the number that is being divided. For example, in 35÷5 = 7, the dividend is 35.
unknown
Information that is not given in a word problem. It is often the answer to the word problem that you are trying to figure out.
remainder
The amount left over when one number is divided by another number. For example, when 38 books are divided into 5 equal groups, there are 7 books per group, with 3 books remaining. In symbols, it looks like this: 38 ÷ 5 = 7 R3
quotient
The answer to a division problem. It is the result of dividing one number by another number. For example, in 35 ÷ 5 =7, the quotient is 7.
rectangular array
A set of numbers or objects arranged in rows and columns.
area model
A strategy to break apart whole numbers by place value, multiply each part, and then add the sums for the product to the original question.
