linking verb
A linking verb connects a subject to a noun or an adjective in the predicate.
transitive verb
A transitive verb is an action verb that is followed by a word or words that answer the question WHAT or WHOM
Action verb
An action verb tells what action (often a physical action) a subject is performing, has performed, or will perform.
Auxiliary verb (helping verb)
An auxiliary verb assists the main verb in a sentence. (Also called helping verbs)
intransitive verb
An intransitive verb is an action verb that is NOT followed by words that answer what? or whom? NO DIRECT OBJECT

verb is a word that expresses action or state of being and is necessary to make a statement.
examples of auxiliary verbs
am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being, has, had, have, do, does, did, may, might, must, can, could, shall, should, will, would.
Examples of linking verbs
is, are, was, were, been, being, am and appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell, sound, stay, taste, and turn.
In a questioning (interrogative) sentence, the auxiliary verb is usually separate from the main verb.
Have they decided to attend the school dance? Auxiliary: have Main: decided
More than one auxiliary verb in a sentence
I have been watching that show. Auxiliary: have been Main: watching
My sister is studying to become a doctor.
